1. I have a feeling that I will be called crazy here, but I probably deserve it.

I have listening to The Unforgettable Fire (the song) a lot lately, and I absolutely love it. This is one of those songs that I played 453,553,543,342,974,736,287,473,565,435,999,323 times in a row when I first heard it.

The first time I heard it live was on the Joshua Tree from Paris DVD. I know, I know, I'm seriously lacking in bootlegs from the 80s. I was very excited, because I have always loved its studio version.

I was disappointed, and I have yet to find a live version of it that I've been happy with. I guess they can't spit the same effects out on stage. In the studio version, also, I can really hear Slane Castle in the background. There's just no real way to bring the recording chambers of Slane Castle to a stadium or arena.

Anyone else agree? Or is there some really awesome live version of it floating around on the interweb tubez? I'm probably not giving its live version a decent chance.
  2. the live versions are a different listening experience to the version found on the album. They are less atmospheric and way more raw. I adore it live though. You are best finding a version with a good audience ambient where you can hear the crowd belt out the 'walk on by'. For that I suggest 1987-07-08 - Brussels.

For a slightly closer to album feel then try out 1985-02-05 - Bologna. It's a really excellent recording and you can hear that opening sequence a lot better but you ain't gonna find anything thats a decent match of the album version to the exact levels that you may wish.

Gerard will know more than I do concerning live versions

But for my part, I love both the album and live versions - check 1987-11-07 - Denver, Colorado - McNichols Sports Arena as a starter, great show and a great version of TUF. It's not the same, but still has that eery feel... and Edge's guitar is just scintillating!
  4. Last post: Try 01-06-1990 Rotterdam..last ever performance so far, very good..
  5. The versions from the UF Tour are indeed closer to the album version, and Bono still hits the high notes on 'Stay with me, stay tonight...' I personally like 1984-10-23 - Nance, France - St. Herblain myself

    Second ditto.

Sometimes I crave the UF version of UF, and other times I crave the JT-Denver version of UF.

    Third.
  9. I haven't heard a bad version of it yet. Paris DVD's my favourite. Edge on keyboard is a lot more accentuated and Bono gives it his all. Bring back the UF!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree to this. It's one of the best Unforgettable fire performances ever.

I thought Bono's voice was a little mangled during the Paris performance

But it's probably one of the best existing recordings so far. And I agree that the song is absolutely brilliant, probably one of their best.
