2001-07-21 - Turin, Italy - Stadio Delle Alpi

Note: Shine Like Stars is clearly snippeted during With Or Without You but it's not referred to in the bootleg section. Any chance of the setlist being amended accordingly?

    Sound
Probably worth its 3-star rating here. My number one bug bear was the audience. I realise it's an audience recording but they were too audible in too many parts of the show. While I much prefer an excellent audience recording over a soundboard, instances where I could clearly hear audience members singing, excuse me, yelling in my ear occurred all too frequently. No real penetration from Larry and there was some distortion towards the end of Beautiful Day.

    Performance

In short, lethargic and laboured. This wasn't helped by the fact that Bono's voice was clearly strained on the night. Maybe they didn't come across as such live because the Italian crowd were really great. In fact, although they were the culprit sound-wise in this recording, they were very much the show's saving grace. On repeated listenings I felt they carried U2 through this performance. It was the only Italian show during the tour which probably helped.

Perhaps the perfect demonstration of how the boys were not 'switched on' was the very slow start. It just sounded like they were just plodding along going through the motions with no real energy or intensity.

Things picked up albeit momentarily from I Will Follow to Desire when some of the passion and enthusiasm we all love heightened somewhat, but then it fell away almost as quickly.

Even some of Elevation's usual high-spots just didn't excite me at all. I refer to Bad/40---->Psalm116/Where The Streets Have No Name and The Fly. The latter was the best thing to come out of the tour but here it was just a bit of nothing (although Bono did use a variation of my favouite Elevation Fly intro - the 'Light and Motion' one.) There was just no ooomph (that's a technical term ).

One question: The crowd were singing something after Stuck In A Moment. Anyone know what that was? It sounded like a soccer chant.

Highlights (very few to speak of):

    * Some subtle, small things stood out in my mind e.g. "Jesus, this is Judas!" at the start of Until The End Of The World, the New York, New York snippet was cheeky, there was a nice keyboard bit during Walk On, the Gloria snippets were interesting and I enjoyed Bono speaking Italian at various stages (yes, this was a highlight!).

    * I Will Follow was played with its usual gusto and was a good attempt at lifting the energy of an otherwise lacklustre performance.

    * Out Of Control for it's spontaneity at the end, although Bono fluffed the start. This is what needs to occur more often. A tribute to their loyal fans in the middle of the song was also a nice touch.

    Overall
I couldn't help but feel underwhelmed. I listened to it several times and just couldn't get into it. I prefer Jeremy's Elevation selection from a few BRT's back - the Portland one - for its diverse setlist and all round energy. 6.5/10.

  9. Della Alpi, Turin, Italy

I wanted to pick a show that was Unique, Energetic and and everything an elevations show should have, and looking at the setlists of this recording and its title“ the longest show of the elevation tour”, I thought I had found its, especially with an enthusiastic Italian crowd and a big venue such as Juventus’s Della Alpi.
What was First notable about this recording was the sound quality, the reason it’s a 3 star audience recordings its clearly audible from the start, with the crowd going most of the singing and Bono being drowned out by the Azzui choir. With this you would assume the bass to be none existent, but that was the first of many surprises in this recording, In a Beautiful Day all four components in the song where hearable and, with the aid of ITunes bass booster, Clayton can at least be heard, if not a little quite.
Bono, from the start, appeared to be far from his best, but as many U2 fans know, this does not stop you from having a good gig (Argentina 2006 for example), however gaps of silence and snippets that I felt, just didn’t flow from song to song, made this gig feel a little jumpy and to relaxed.
The outstanding point of this gig, at first look, would seem to be the setlist, not the conventional Elevation/ Walk On with a load in-between structure, but the add bonus of Pride and Out of Control to complete the set. This excellence would seem to be further be reinforced by Elevation favourites such as Gone and The Fly. Though these two sounds were performed “good”, the second encore was “scruffy” to say the least, Pride lost its pride with Bono’s reluctant sounding singing (Sarajevo anyone), and what sounded like Larrys Drums cutting out. Even though I don’t really like Out of Control, its nice to here out of Control every now and then, put it felt out of place at the end, and could have been better placed in the middle of the setlist (like Slane).

    Highlights
The Fly: a highlights at any elevation gig, though not played at its best
Gone: great song, should be played more
The crowd: Nice to hear them after the Elevation Sound boards that we’re used to

    Lowlights
    Bono’s Voice: Sounded very weak
Pride: I personally thought it was crap, though its not my favourite song
Sound: weak, flat, what you would expect from a 3 star audience recording, but I’ve heard better.

    Sound: 6
    Performance: 6

  10. 2001-07-21 - Turin, Italy - Stadio Delle Alpi

    Performance :

1 - Elevation / Creep : Very good performance liked the edge's guitar and Adam's Bass , as a general rule , i like this tour version of "Elevation" better than the vertigo version

2- Beautiful Day : not special one , but Edge guitar is alsom amazing , the crowd cheers at the begining of the choruses was amazing though their clapping at the beggining of the song was a bit annoying

3- Until The End Of The World : heared better than that one , though Adam's Bass is wow and Larry's drums was very Powerful , and Edge's continue on special performance

4 - New year's day : Bono's Voice is starting to be solid on that night , the other band members is having a wonderful night playing together especially Adam's Bass

5- Kite : Wow Wow , Bono's voice and emotion on that song is great , great , defienetly one of the best Performance of that song

6- Gone : One of the best performance i heared for that song , great Bono's Voice , and best larry's drums i ever heared , and Edge's solo at the end is amazing .

7- New York : didn't quite enjoy the song ( maybe bec. i don't like it so much) but larry's drumming was so loud and edge's solo is what made the song worth listening to it

8- I'll Follow : not special performance , maybe it meant to be special that they didn't play it since a long ago where i liked the boy era performance of the song

9- Subday Bloody Sunday : not a good one , bono's speech made it dull and boring taking away alot of the glory from that great song

11- Stuck In A Moment : Reviving point for that night , Bono's solid vocal is back again , it's just a beautiful song

12- In A little While : good performance of this song , like the bit of the change in how they played the song

13- Desire : worst version i ever heared , sry , but what was that , this song should be big and loud , i had to listen to various version of this song after i listened to this one to return my faith in that song , even the snippet was not good

14- Stay : Great acoustic performance of the song , one of the highlight of the show , made me listen to it over and over and over , it's just Great

15- Bad : Back To Bono's great emotion , he put too much in that song , a big cheer for that excellent Performance, quite like the "40" snippet , great lead into Streets

16- Where The Streets Have No Name : Back to Wow performance of that song , it's amazing that i'm spechless , what can i say about the most amazing live song in the world

17- Mysterious Ways : Great performance of that song , Edge's guitar kicks ass in that song , very strong and joyful and the snippet "Sexual Healing" is fantastic , not the first time i listen to it , but the first time i enjoy it too much , f*cking awesome

18- The Fly : i like the quite intro to that song , new to me , quite different but amazing , Edge's Guitar is WOW WOW WOW ( big bow to the most talented guitarist in the world) , it's a wisdom saying that the elevation version of The Fly is the best one and I believe in that saying.

19- Bullet The Blue Sky: quit a good performance of this song ,really one of the highlits of the night , and wat makes it that the amazing guitar of Edge and amazing Adam's bass , didn't quite like the snippet

20- With Or Without You : Bono Voice is so exhausted on that song , should have sang this voice early on that night , nothing special on that song

21- One : Special performance of that song , Bono voice is strong on that song , Adam's Bass is strong , i enjoyed it a lot , but i was disappointed when there was "Unchained Melody" snippet .

22- Wake Up Dead Man : good performance of that song , i used to hate the version of the studio album , but this version is better that that on the album .

23- Walk On : Amazing Performance of that song , it's just a fabulous tune. one of my favourite live songs

24- Pride (In The Name Of Love) : Didn't do too much for me , specially that Bono's Voice was not quite audiable at the begining of the song , Larry's strong drumming is also absent here

25-Out Of Control : another Boy era song , i'm gonna say like i said in "i will follow" , maybe it meant to be special that they didn't play it since a long ago , but i liked it better than "i will follow"

*Bono Voice is lost after "Bullet The Blue Sky" , but maybe i think that he regained it , or maybe the songs was strong that I didn't notice it also in the begining of the concert , his voice was lost

*Highlights : "kite" , "Gone" , "Stay" , "Streets" , "The Fly" , "Bullet The Blue Sky" ,
    "Walk On"

    6/10

    Sound :

i guess it deserves more than three stars , the only proplem is the crowd noice at some points , Wich is not so annoying , but there 's four star audience wich is lower than that.

    7/10

    Overall :

I Guess this show is for the die hard fan only , though some song performance may be supplied as bonus tracks on an "Elevation Tour" compilation , if you know what i'm talking about.

    5.5/10

  11. Great reviews Aussie, Daley and Karim! I shall be posting shortly
