    Sound

Each bootleg has there moment of magic, and is this case it was its down fall which was its heroin. Despite the incredibly annoying ladies who were more interested in chatting about getting a good view, I listened to this bootleg enjoying hearing people have a good time, the cheers and “Oh My God”’s when the piano kicked in with City of Blinding Lights, the singing along to every song and the fun of hearing the crowd get it wrong when Bono changes the Lyrics In Walk On. At the end of Love and Peace or Else, you know the crowd would go wild when the drums of Sunday Bloody Sunday started. It was a bootleg where the energy of the crowd was far more predominant than the band itself, and this, in my view, made it a good listen.

The Band were listenable and not as bad as I had first got the impression. Parts did fade, get distorted or just go plain quite at times, but to no extent as to make this bootleg unlistenable, and in many ways it is similar to the Berlin gig from the Second Leg, but with a vastly more audible crowd.

    Performance

This said there was nothing wrong with the bands performance, it was not the best I’ve heard, songs such as Walk On sounded “rusty”, and Vertigo had its difficulties, but there was no question that this was the band heading towards the top form shown in the Melbourne and Sydney, if not quite there yet. Bonos voice, of what I could hear, sounds recovered and energised from the South American gigs and spirts where high. At the start, from and untrained ear it sounded like The Edge had technical difficulties with the Guitar cutting out in Vertigo and with something not quite right in Walk On, though those who know know more could easily prove me wrong.

    Highlghts

Walk On – Not at its best, could even be considered crap compared to some elevation shows and the following Sydney show, but it made a change.
The Crowd (apart from in BTBS) – Defently put across the energy of the gig
The Fly – again not the best, but it stood out, and a great transistion into WOWY

Sound: a different kind of 6

    Performance: 7

Overall : 6.5 – I actually think this is a good bootleg, I would rather have that crowd than a Elevation sound board

Thanks for the review mate. Agree with you almost entirely except for the crowd. I found them distracting. Good to see you also named Walk On as a highlight. It certainly was and I don't even like the song that much.
  3. my review is coming tomorrow... I'm prepping my notes as I post this

    5th Leg Vertigo

    Performance

Nothing really stands out, with the exception of a few songs. Walk On and SYCMIOYO were great. Miss Sarajevo is one of those songs that isn't really well known, but nonetheless a great song. Zoo Station and the Fly were good as always. I was happy with the encore. Zoo, Fly, WOWY, Saints, AOH and Kite are favorites of mine, so IMO it was a great encore.

Its a 5th leg Vertigo show, so that kinda explains itself. However the sound quality kinda counters that, but that's for another section.

    Audience

On one the previous reviews, Elevation 2001-07-21 Torino, the audience saved the show. In this case, it was the exact opposite. Off-key singing and convos made it very hard to concentrate on the music.

I'll quote Pete Townshend, who I think sums up my feelings:

    Sound

This show ended up as a 3 star... very understandable sound wise. However, some people in the audience forget they're at a rock show and think its watching MTV in their living room. Also, it is the stereotypical expression of the term mp3. It isn't that good a recording to begin with. It's like listening to the Edge at Red Rocks... it just doesn't sound that good and the guitar seems far away. To try and listen to it reminds me of listening to The Rolling Stones bootlegs from 1969. If you don't understand that.... then I'll explain again. The band is somewhat clear, but just not audible enough.

    Highlights

Kite, which was awesome as always. Glad it was the set closer.

The Fly, which is always good whenever it's played

    Lowlights

    Still Haven't Found wasn't played
    ^kidding

Besides that, the band was good, but not great. I didn't find anything I disliked about it, setlist wise.

    Overall

Overall, I thought it was a good show. There are far better shows quality wise out there, same for the audience. I think the set was great, just one thing missing from it. It didn't have any sparks or pizazz. That's what makes a bootleg so great. To capture something on tape is one thing, but when the show has the spark or tension, on tape it sounds like fire.
  9. I'll post mine tomorrow in the morning.
  10. Still plenty left guys. I think about 7 by my reckoning. I'd like to read some more!
