I agree, sometimes its hard to discern what the best cut of the song is. R&H is incredible, with the whole crowd singing along and what not. But put the original version on a nice stereo and crank it, that'll convince you the album version stands out more than anything else.
And yeah, "typical Edge genius" found here--he was messing around with those chords at the soundcheck for the Hawaii show on the War Tour, and came up with this rock n roll anthem. And I must say, it truly is anthemic.

By the way, don't you mean that the bass strings are nylon covered with metal?
. I just always call them "metal" strings, although I can appreciate that it could easily get confused
