  2. I spent a few hours at Guitar Center the other day. They had a Variax 700 set up.

    (similar to THIS)


    The one set up was unfortunately a natural finish version versus an Edge approved black with red "vertigo" logo or silver sparkle finish.

    I had played one once before, when I played "In God's Country" at a tribute show once. Chas from The Joshua Tree (Los Angeles) was kind enough to let me play his - and his IS in Edge approved silver sparkle - he re-finished his.

    So I know that they could be fun but at GC, I had a chance to play around with the various modeling controls and such. They are a pretty fun guitar. Might just be worth the $1000.00-ish that they cost. Might have to put that on my Chanukah list.

    That guitars must be freaking amazing, indeed. The silver one is lovely indeed
  4. Yeah I played one at GC a while back too, my friend and I had loads of fun with the sitar setting.

    By the way, picked up a Casino the other day -- the thing rocks! Tons of feedback from all the metal hardware but once you've mastered that you get a sound to be reckoned with.

    Casino is ALSO on my list. Plus many musicians I admire have used them; so that sways my vote some. Edge has one. Lennon played one. Paul Weller uses one pretty regularly... Ed O'Brien (Radiohead) uses one...

    Did you get natural or tobacco finish for your Casino? They are only around $550-$650 - that's a lot of guitar greatness for a fair price.

    Natural finish, same as Paul Weller (a hero of mine) used in the vid for Echoes Round The Sun (below). I think that the Beatles used it for the Revolver-Sgt. Pepper era is enough of a qualifier it's a really fantastic guitar, now I see why they loved it so. Ed O'Brien used to use a red Gibson ES-330 (as Edge did a tobacco finish one circa AB/ZooTV) up until this last album--now he's got a really nice sunburst/tobacco/nice looking Casino. Gem Archer of Oasis (another of my guitar heroes) used one a little bit, got a really great solo sound out of it.

    I think the total was like $620 or something, but my financier (my dad) picked that up

  9. While Jonny Greenwood get the most notice for guitars in Radiohead, Thom Yorke is pretty good and Ed O'Brien is an unsung genius.

    Ed's more of adding texture to Yorke's songs. Greenwood is more the solist on top.

    Met Ed O'Brien at the Grammy's in 2001 (or was it 2002... I forget). Anywho... He and Colin Greewood (Radiohead bassist) are both cool as heck. AND Ed is a HUGE U2 fan. Radiohead toured w/R.E.M. in 1995 and are all pretty huge fans of R.E.M. too.

    Agreed--not only is Thom pretty good with a guitar but he can sing very well at the same time. I also find it interesting that Thom has so many guitars and Jonny seems to stick mostly to his Tele Plus.

    I'm off to a guitar store later today to pick up some things--any recommendations for strings? I've been using .10 D'Addarios, but someone told me the other day Dunlops are much better. What does Edge use?

    Do you prefer pure Nickel, Nickel/Steel or Stainless Steel? Steel lasts longer and gives a little more highs; Nickel rusts faster and gives slightly more mids.

    My strat is now set up for GHS David Gilmour 10-48 (steel). I like the boom of the fat bass strings combined to bendability of the slim G string. My Tele is still strung with D'Addario 10-46 (nickel), they are kind of standard, you can't go wrong with those, and I still have a few sets flying around here. On my Jazz guitar I use Dean Markley 11-52 (nickel/steel) because this guitar's bridge requires a wound G string.
