Somehow I just can't talk myself into liking spike- shaped BCRich and Ibanez- style metal shredder guitars (but I I'd surely like to try out an Ibanez ARX). Anything that's more extreme than an Explorer or Firebird doesn't give me a desire to play or own it. Since I once owned a Career Evolution Fat Telecaster, I also acquired a liking for Korean guitars (PRS SE, Epiphone, Electromatic, UnSung, Cort).

I'd say I'm fairly similar in taste in so far as I am not a fan of "metal"-styled guitars, but I'd also throw Gibson Flying-Vs and SGs into that category. I dislike sharp features on guitars such as the cutaways on an SG or a classic Ibanez - I much prefer the smooth aesthetic feel to stuff like Les Pauls, Strats and Teles etc. It's interesting that you mentioned Firebirds, because I remember the first guitar I ever fell in love with was this deep red Firebird hanging on the wall in a music shop in Norwich - it was just gorgeous, but at the time I didn't play guitar to any great extent. An Explorer (probably Epiphone) is next on my list of guitars/pedals/amps to get, but there's an awful lot on that list lol...
  2. Just giving this topic a bit of a dust-off - I'd always been wondering why EBTTRT sounds so much different live compared to on the album; different keys lol. On the album, it's in A, but live it's always been played in Db , although in retrospect it's no wonder why Bono falsettoed the "take me higher"s lol!
  3. Topic of keys something I've been wondering about for a while. I was playing along to the Slane DVD, seems that Bullet, Pride, One, perhaps All I Want Is You are played a key or two lower. When did they start doing this? For what songs? I imagine it was to accommodate Bono's voice as he's grown older.

One superb version of Real Thing is the Live at the Manray, Paris version that was a b-side to Stuck in a Moment.

I think all the songs you mentioned are half step lower...obviously because Bono got old and it would be too hard for him to sing these ones on the original key...a lot of bands do this. When? I am not the better person to answer...but I guess since at least PopMart, when he had the voice problems.

I thinhk that Pride dropped in key on Popmart. But I think it dropped another 1/2 step for Elevation and Vertigo. I'd have to check my bootlegs and compare.

Interestingly enough, Mysterious Ways went from being played on a guitar tuned too Eb to standard E - for Vertigo tour.

So while in many cases, lower to accomodate vocals should like the reason but not in every case - as Bono sang MW in a higher key than previous.

BTBS should be in Eb minor, I've never come across a version that was in any key but that (album or live, i.e. it's played half a step down from standard tuning); post-ZooTV, Pride has always been played in A (i.e. played on a guitar tuned a whole step down), and during PopMart they'd use the same guitar to play ISHFWILF and AIWIY, with the capo on the 2nd fret for both (and so, interestingly, despite Bono's voice being f*cked, they played AIWIY in a higher key than in previous tours. They went back to classic Ab during Elevation, but they did play it in A a few times during Vertigo. See Buenos Aires as an example) - prior to PopMart, it was played in Bb, so it was played half a step down from standard tuning, so if anyone tries to use Bono's voice on Pride post-ZooTV as a pointer to say that his voice is on the up, don't listen because it's being played in lower keys! And as for One, it's always been performed in B (i.e. played half a step down from the album, where it was played in C).
  7. On the subject of keys, just found a version of Electric Co. in C, which kinda caught me out...played a whole step down? Wonder what guitar Edge was using at the time...I know he had a propensity to play it on his Strat. during the War/TUF era...(1984-11-05 - Edinburgh, Scotland - Edinburgh Playhouse a.k.a. "Unforgettable Scots" is the gig in question, I don't have many TUF shows so couldn't say whether this was a one off or what?)

What?!?!? Electric Co on a Strat?? I thought it was THE Explorer song, together with I Will Follow

  9. Electric Co. was played on his explorer for the early days. So at that time it was THE explorer song with I Will Follow. However, every song at that time was THE explorer song, that was his ONLY guitar haha. But for the War tour he switched to his strat for that song, he also switched to his strat for A Day Without Me, and maybe a couple more, I can't think right now I'm at school.

Then for UF and JT he switched back to the explorer for the early days songs. Then they were all dropped until elevation, where he brought the explorer back out. I Will Follow was played on his les paul during the popmart tour, which was weird, and it was played on his clapton strat during lovetown. Then on elevation he used his explorer for I Will Follow, and also for the vertigo tour, however he switched to his Les Paul for ELectric Co. on the vertigo tour.

Basically, he likes to experiment. If you look at the October tours, and the early days, he switched gutiars a lot between concerts. He had a gibson Sonnex, his Les Paul, his Explorer, his strat, and so on. Weird.

"I Will Follow" was played on the yellow Eric Clapton model Fender Stratocaster during Love Town tour.

Seems he had and used the Gibson Sonex for 5 minutes. I was looking at some of the 1982 Summer Festival shows... can't remember which one's where what - but one of them he used the Sonex for Rejoice and a few weeks later it was the 1975 Les Paul Custom (that was auctioned in 2007). Seems the Sonex was quickly put away once he got the LP Custom.

That said, the Sonex isn't a bad guitar. I have played a few in shops and they are a pretty good sounding and very playable guitar.

  11. You have seen Red Rocks, right? Not to mention the Chicago DVD lol...?

You want a genuine Explorer song, see 11 O'Clock Tick Tock (and obviously Beautiful Day and Miracle Drug, although I don't think they've achieved true Explorer status yet...) - 99% certain he's never played it on anything else.

I'm still intrigued as to what guitar he was playing a whole step down? During PopMart (and in subsequent tours) he's used a Strat. in dropped tuning mainly for Pride, and also on occasions AIWIY, ISHFWLIF and Bad, but he didn't really piss around much in the way of tuning during the early days...

EDIT - speaking of tunings, what was the Tele. Edge used for TUF tuned to?

EDIT 2 - was listening to the Boston St. Patrick's Day 1992 show earlier on, noticed that pretty much everything was being played in standard tuning; that being the case, why the drop down half a step? I need to get the Lakelands show again, and then I can compare, but my god ZooTV was the mother of all tours, not least because pretty much everything about the monster it became changed from its original stuff! Interestingly enough, Edge plays Van Diemen's Land in A during the acoustic set, and when you consider it was originally recorded in F#/Gb, that's a fairly sizeable jump up (they also play Dirty Ol' Town in G, whereas whenever it's stuck on the end of RTSS during Lovetown, it's played in Db).

EDIT 3 - browsing through U2 Show earlier, noticed a picture of Adam from the War Tour in full flow, except he was playing his bass left-handed...now, either he's ambidextrous or it's another example of lazy journalism...
  12. Yes I have, but the last time I paid attention while watching Red Rocks I didn't even know the name of any of those guitars... I've become a guitar addict very lately, about 8 months ago or so... And I'm not a fan of Chicago, I've watched it 3 or 4 times only.

Lazy journalism!!! They probably had a photo and didn't know which side of it had to go upwards, and they put it wrongly, therefore Adam apperas as left-handed... In the tickets of the U2 concert in Madrid 1987-07-15 (pressed by U2 themselves ¬¬), Edge appears left-handed too.
