  1. Is it just me, or Larrys kit at the Obama Inaug was really small?


  2. "We Are One" - Obama Inauguration concert kit:


    The Kit Used for the "We Are One" show was a bit of a hybrid of drum models.
    - Oak Custom (24") bass drum
    - Oak Custom (16") floor tom
    - Absolute Maple (14") rack tom

    ...all in silver sparkle. The chap from Yamaha wasn't sure about the snare drum. It didn't look like the one of the Brady snares that Larry's used... I will have to investigate the video footage and pictures a bit more.

    Kit used for Letterman and Fordham:



    Differences are the bongos and Roland pad on the Letterman/Fordham kit. And all drums are Oak Custom model.

    So essentially, the kit is the same size as the Obama Inauguration Concert kit. Same more and then removes items that are to Larry's left of his hi-hat, as needed. During boots the Roland pad and bongos are there. When a floor tom is needed there, that replaces the other items.

    Maybe they'll do what I've seen sometimes and store all the amps and equipment backstage (understage in their case I guess) and use the wireless hookups. Brad Paisley and the Stones have done similar things I know.


    All of the amps are mic'ed and most of what you hear will be through the PA. While Edge has had 5 amps on-stage (Vertigo tour) there were more BEHIND those amps that are isolated, mic'ed and go straight to Joe O'Herilihy for mixing.

    Any stage movement would probably be done between songs so there wouldn't be much of a doppler effect.

    I guess what I meant was if theoretically there is no front, which way do the amps face? So yeah I supposed they'd be miked from backstage.

    Also on that topic, I wonder where Edge's pedalboard and microphone will go.

    Moving this whole setup around should be fun...not! Looks like there are 4 days in between shows to get things moved and set up.

    U2 360° seems like a step towards what the Stones have been doing over the last few tours--maximum mobility. It should be awesome! Though I'm pissed the North American leg doesn't contain any shows near me

    To go with the 360 degree theme, LARRY should do like Neil Peart (Rush) with acoustic kit in front and electronic it in back (all on a rotating riser). That'd be good fun!

    As Larry did use the Roland kit for a lot of the writing of the new album; as well as a good amount of the recordings (Fez/Being Born sounds like the Roland kit to me)

    Just a thought. Something outside the Larry-box. And it could be cool as heck!
  6. Now in that, I am not suggesting Larry should have all of the gear Neil Peart does, just saying that the acoustic up front / electronic behind - and all on a rotating drum riser, like Neil Peart's... could be cool.

    I had never heard of them til I saw the R30 DVD show played on MTV. Blew me away. What a band.


    On a side note--is it just me, or have a lot of items (Fender guitars anyway) on Musician's Friend and Guitar Center websites gone WAY up in price as of late? I know times are tough, but if they wanted people to buy gear wouldn't they lower prices?

  11. It's easy to slam opening acts. Or it seems to be. I heard many complain about The Sugarcubes opening for U2 in 1992. Those same people later say with pride how they "saw Bjork way-back when she was with her other band".

    Ugh.

    Similar, I remember many complaining on various forums about PJ Harvey (whom I loved) during Elevation and Kings of Leon (Who I love and have seen headline their own shows).

    The point being, many don't give opening acts a chance. Many aren't patient to listen to something that isn't U2 when waiting for U2.

    There is nothing wrong with opening up to listen to an opening act. U2 brought them there for a reason - they see something in them and want others who might not hear that act or stumble across their records to have that opportunity. In that, that is a great thing that U2 does.

    That said, Kanye Pest? He obviously acts and speaks with less arrogance than he does in the general press and at awards shows. Maybe he needs a bit more time hanging out w/U2 to learn how to keep his ego in check.
  12. Non-U2 related, but seeing as you're a guitar guru, do you know what kind of amps Robbie Krieger used in The Doors? Also any guitars other than his SG? I saw a video of him playing a LP on The End once.
