    hmm, are we misunderstanding eachother now? I meant that -I- don't play the guitar, but still wanted to know why you wouldn't play that particular one (even if that meant that I wouldn't understand your explanation, but 'too big' I can understand, lol).



    I just love this topic so much, even though I have no clue what's going on most of the time am trying to absorb it all though.

    Talkbox... well the DID cover Peter Framton songs early on.

    I am sure if he DID use one, it'd be ran though other odd effects so that he'd be doing something a bit different than the usual things that Peter Frampton, RItchie Sambora (Bon Jovi) and Joe Perry (Aerosmilth) did with it.

    Oh I see, I thought you meant why would I care if I don't play guitar lol? My mistake, sorry! And yeah, there's nothing necessarily technical about why I wouldn't want to play it, i.e. nothing related to the tone, the action, the pickups etc. - it's just personal preference with regard to how the thing looks; doesn't go with me. Like I say, too big, pointy headstock and just not my kinda thing lol!

    Glad to share. Them'z two of m'favies from the Vertigo tour. The blurry one is cool as feck. I wish I had a bigger copy to make a shirt with.

    I'd put a caption under it:

    So if anyone knows how to make that bigger without losing resolution... hook a brutha up!

    Hahahaha... Admittedly, a bit odd to watch. It's a bit of a one dimensional sound and a bit "gimmick-y"

    Famous users
    Other early adopters of the talk box were Jeff Beck and Joe Walsh. Joe Walsh used it on his album "Rocky Mountain Way" (1973) which features an extended talk box solo. Joe Walsh used a talk box in the popular Eagles song "Those Shoes." Jeff Beck used it on Beck, Bogart, and Apprice's live version of "Black Cat Moan", as well as on his 1974 album "Blow By Blow" on his cover of The Beatles song "She's a Woman".

    A talk box was used by Nazareth on their 1975 album Hair of the Dog, for the song of the same name.

    In 1977, Southern rock band Stillwater used the Talk Box for the chorus and backing vocals of their song "Mindbender."

    In 1988, Heil sold the manufacturing rights to Dunlop Manufacturing, Inc. who currently builds the Heil Talk Box to the exact standards that Bob Heil designed in 1973. Peter Frampton also now sells his own line of custom designed "Framptone" products, including a talk box.[13]

    One notable performer who utilizes the talkbox is Richie Sambora, the guitarist with rock band Bon Jovi, on their hit single, Livin On A Prayer and since on Bad Medicine, It's My Life, One Wild Night, Bounce, Everyday, I Want To Be In Love and We Got It Goin On.

    Aerosmith had also used the talk box in their hit single "Sweet Emotion". Joe Perry starts out using the talk box in the beginning in the song singing the chorus.

    Many Funk bands utilized the effect as well, perhaps most notably Roger Troutman of Roger and Zapp, who then taught hip-hop producer DJ Quik to master the art. More groups who used it include Parliament/Funkadelic, Sly and the Family Stone and Lipps Inc on "Funkytown".

    Alice in Chains use the effect in Man in the Box.

    The talkbox is used in "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" from Pink Floyd's seminal album Animals. It was used again on Keep Talking from 1994's The Division Bell. The performance of this song on the live P•U•L•S•E (film) shows the effect in use in concert.

    Eric Krasno, guitarist in the funk/jazz trio Soulive has used the talkbox extensively, for example on the song "So Romantic" on the group's album Doin' Something and on "Don't Tell Me" from the band's most recent 2007 album No Place Like Soul.

    DJ Swami of the British-Asian band Swami regularly uses the talkbox on songs such as "DesiRock", "Move" and "Electro Jugni".

    In concert, Manny Charlton of the Scottish hard rock band Nazareth uses a talk box disguised as a set of bagpipes.

    Van Halen used a Heil Talk Box on the single "Can't Get This Stuff No More", from their short-lived 1996 reunion with original lead singer David Lee Roth and the recording of their Best of Volume I greatest hits album. According to guitarist Edward Van Halen, the tube from the talk box used in the first part of the solo didn't work properly unless stuck into the back of his throat, triggering his gag reflex. As a result, Roth had to step in and use his own mouth for that portion of the recording.

    Guitarist Slash has used a talk box many times. He first used it in "Anything Goes" from the Guns N' Roses album Appetite For Destruction. During the Use Your Illusion Tour, he used a talk box for his Rocket Queen and Move to the City solos. He also used one in "Dust N' Bones" and on the Guns N' Roses' cover of "Hair of the Dog" on their album "The Spaghetti Incident?". More recently, he used one in Velvet Revolver's song "Get Out the Door," from the band's 2007 album Libertad, and their cover of Pink Floyd's "Money".

    In 2006, Tool featured an extensive guitar solo using a talk box in the song Jambi on 10,000 Days.

    Weezer used a talk box in their song "Beverly Hills".

    The Foo Fighters also made use of a talk box in their song "Generator".

    Lead guitarist Travis Stever of the band Coheed and Cambria uses a Heil Talk Box extensively in live shows and on albums. The effect is prominent in the band's often improvised performance of The Final Cut.

    Rancid used the effect on their song Django from their 2003 album Indestructible.

    Mötley Crüe used the effect on their song "Kickstart My Heart" from their 1989 album Dr. Feelgood.

    Chromeo member P-Thugg uses a talk box on both Chromeo albums (Fancy Footwork and She's in Control).

    Zakk Wylde made extensive use of his talk box on his song Fire It Up.

    Peter Frampton utilized a talk box in a Geico "Celebrity Interpretation" commercial. Prior to that he had used it extensively on his "Frampton comes alive" album. Released on A & M Records 1976

    Although not generally used for bass guitar, Larry Graham used it with his Fender jazz bass on the title track of the 1977 Graham Central Station album "Now Do U Wanna Dance?"

    Nick Didkovsky composed a piece for Sirius String Quartet which employs four talk boxes and other live electronics, entitled "Tube Mouth Bow String". The piece was recorded and released by Pogus Productions in 2007.[14]

    James Hetfield of Metallica used it for the song "The House Jack Built".

    The track "Walk this Way", on Aerosmith's Live Bootleg album, shows extensive use of the effect.

    Steely Dan's "Haitian Divorce" on The Royal Scam includes the effect.

    The talk box was used in Rascal Flatts' Me and My Gang.

    Supertramp's guitarist used it on "Bloody Well Right"

    Many mistake T-Pain for using a talkbox to get his effect, this is false, he uses auto-tune to get this effect.

    David Cook used a talk box on American Idol for his performance of the Beatles' Day Tripper on Tuesday March 18, 2008, drawing mixed responses from the judges.

    Rapper Snoop Dogg used the talk box as a prop in his 2007 single, "Sexual Eruption."

    Scorpions guitarist Matthias Jabs uses a talk box in his solo for "The Zoo".

    Bo Bice used a talk box on American Idol for his performance of "Witness" from this CD See the Light on Thursday, May 7, 2008 during a special appearance on the results show.

    The Hold Steady uses a talk box on the song "Joke About Jamaica" on their 2008 album, "Stay Positive".

    Rocker Buckethead uses the talk box in the song "Pure Imagination", a remake of the song from the motion picture, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory".

  12. While Edge is known for using vintage gear, these day, many items he uses were new and state of the art when he got them.

    The Korg A3 was relatively new when he got it and began using it for Achtung Baby (and Zooropa). The Korg SDD-3000 was a fairly new item when he started using it. His 1976 Gibson Explorer was a mere 2 years old when he bought it... and his original "Blackie" Strat was off the shelf and only a few years old when he bought that.

    Edge does use vintage gear but it wasn't necessarily 'vintage' when he first got it.

    Case in point... The Line 6 distortion modeler. A fairly new item that he went as far as to have Line 6 make a rack mount version for him. And his use of the Line 6 Variax 700 modeling acoustic assuredly help sell more of them for Line 6 (for those not in the know, the Variax 700 being the guitars used for "The Fly" and "Love and Peace" during the Vertigo tour.

    So what might Edge look in to using? I am sure we could all make a laundry list. But after seeing Muse's HAARP DVD... Manson guitars might be a place to look.

    They make some interesting things and make them to order. Matt Bellamy has various effects built into his Manson guitars.

    Bellamy also has Z-Vex Fuzz Factory fuzz effects built into some of his guitars.

    Not saying that Edge should copy the models that Bellamy has... although I am sure Edge could make interesting use of many of Bellamy's models... but Manson could build some interesting tone crazy goodness for The Edge too.
