    Actually, all the tone knob does it to cut some of the treble. If you leave it on 10, it is like if it didn't exist, the signal goes "integral" to the amp (or to your processor or whatever is after the guitar on your chain).

    Question I have about reading tabs:

    E-----------------------12---------------12----12s/14s/12----
    B--------10--9--10------------9--10--------------------------

    I know the s/ usually means slide up but on this tab (it's TTTYAATW) does it mean hammer on? As it sounds weird sliding over the 13th fret, and how do u slide up from 14 to 12? like it says in the end

    This Miracle Drug tab also has me wondering whether you're supposed to slide from the 7 to the 9 over the 8, or just hammer on the 9?

    Slide up faster.

    It really sounds like you're trying to do the fancy/advanced stuff way too soon. You have to remember it takes YEARS(for the vast majority of players) to be a good guitar player. It takes a long time to build the dexterity in your fingers to be able to slide up and down, do vibratos at different speeds, hammering on and pulling off and so on. Also, a lot of the time tab is just one person's interpretation of how to play a certain song... what sounds right to the tab writer doesn't mean that's the exact way the original musician played it.

    Often times there are multiple ways to play the exact same song, depending on the player's style.

    You sound like a lot of wannabe players who think they will be able to do everything right away if they just have fancy equipment. Then they get frustrated that they don't sound like the record and give up.

    When artists are in the studio, especially people like The Edge do a TON of experimenting. You also have to remember that old tube amps sound vastly different if played on... lets say 2(moderately loud) than they do on 8 or 9, with the power tubes glowing hot and really pushing the power out of the speakers, then you have different types of power tubes, pre-amp tubes and, lets not forget what so many people do...... A HELL OF A LOT OF TONE COMES FROM YOUR FINGERS.

    In my opinion, you should step away from trying to exactly copy The Edge and learn how to do the very basics first.

    Or do u reduce the pressure when sliding over the fret in the middle (ie. to prevent the string from being held to the fretboard there) and then apply full pressure when you reach the fret you're sliding to



    I'm not trying to do the fancy stuff, i'm trying to play Miracle Drug and TTTYAATW they're both very simple, easy to learn songs - even the solo in Miracle Drug seems relatively easy (doesn't have pulloffs, fingerbends, hammer ons etc).

  8. That's pretty much what I usually play with. My Strat, compressor peddle and my Hot Rod Deluxe Ltd.

    s/ means slide, not only slide up, it can be slide from 7th to 9th and then to 5th... The " s/ " (or sometimes just the bar " / " ) means slide, whether it's to a upper fret or not.

    And the slides are done applying full pressure in all frets, you don't have to reduce the strenght when you go through the other frets. If you have to slide from 6th to 9th frets, you simply put your finger on 6th, pull the string and then go moderately quickly (it depends on the song, obviously) to the 9th, going through 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Otherwise it wouldn't be a proper slide, just pushing two different notes. A slide contains all frequencies from the note X to the note Y

    So you're messing with Miracle Drug now, huh? It was the first U2 song (the riff and the solo, actually) that I ever learnt... Great memories

    Yea Miracle Drug seems quite easy to learn and sounds great.

    On the sliding, I realise when ur doing a slide solo you use a slide and so apply full pressure on all frets in between the ones you are sliding to, but when sliding with fingers do you still do the same? It sounds a bit weird when you pull the string over the metal frets

    And you have to slide pretty quickly otherwise the string falls dead and the slide won't sound (though I am practicing unamplified atm and the longer sustain you get with an amp may fix this).

    I was also trying to learn the riff from Magnificent:

    I don't know why there is a slide symbol after the 8s on the G string when the next notes are on the D string? What does that mean? I'm guessing it means you slide up to the first 4 on the D string from the fret below so D 3--/--4?
