    And the slides are done applying full pressure in all frets, you don't have to reduce the strenght when you go through the other frets. If you have to slide from 6th to 9th frets, you simply put your finger on 6th, pull the string and then go moderately quickly (it depends on the song, obviously) to the 9th, going through 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Otherwise it wouldn't be a proper slide, just pushing two different notes. A slide contains all frequencies from the note X to the note Y

    Yea Miracle Drug seems quite easy to learn and sounds great.

    On the sliding, I realise when ur doing a slide solo you use a slide and so apply full pressure on all frets in between the ones you are sliding to, but when sliding with fingers do you still do the same? It sounds a bit weird when you pull the string over the metal frets

    And you have to slide pretty quickly otherwise the string falls dead and the slide won't sound (though I am practicing unamplified atm and the longer sustain you get with an amp may fix this).

    I was also trying to learn the riff from Magnificent:

    I don't know why there is a slide symbol after the 8s on the G string when the next notes are on the D string? What does that mean? I'm guessing it means you slide up to the first 4 on the D string from the fret below so D 3--/--4?

    That was only part of the riff which is maybe why it seems wrong.
    As the guy who tabbed that seems pretty pro, as you can see from the full tab (he even managed to tab the faint rhythm guitar you hear playing in the background)

    Also i've encountered the slide on a different string thing before, like in this tab of the brilliant 'bass groove' type interlude in Cedars of Lebanon

    As you can see it also has a slide to the 8 on the D string that doesn't begin on any other fret on the string like the Magnificent tab I posted earlier.
  5. A slide simply marked as " / X " means that you have to slide from the beggining of the fretboard... Or, given that doing that extra-long-slide is pretty hard if you do not move at light-speed (like most of us do ), most of the times you can simply slide from 2 or 3 frets before the fret indicated. Whatever sounds right, it will be good enough.
  6. And regarding the odd Magnificent tab you pasted some posts ago, if you find a "-----8/ -----" it means the same I explained before, it means sliding down (theorically) from the 8th fret to the start of the fretboard... But sliding down 2 or 3 frets would always do

    Also I've decide to practice my guitar unamplified for the time being, is that smart?
    I figure its better to get the basics right first without having to worry about amp settings and distortion etc.

    I've also noticed that electric seems a lot more 'forgiving' to play than acoustic, ie. small mistakes that are noticeable when played on acoustics (or unamplified electrics) are hard to hear when you play full electric, they sort of get lost in the wash

    I think that by practicing unamplified i'll have better playing habits when I start playing with an amp.

    Or are there no real benefits to learning this way, and i'm just wasting my time?
  8. I support your idea, man... I started with a spanish, then went to electric. I think it's better that way, indeed you don't have to care for amp settings... And you will only notice your failures and mistakes if you're un-amplified, that's for sure.

  10. i dunt want to sound like a dumb arse but this next question might show how very little i know about guitars apart from actually playing them.

    Ive got an Epiphone SG, and im thinking of buying a new guitar like an epiphone LP or explorer, but im worried that once i put it through my ME-70 its just gona sound like my SG. Is this way of thinking wrong???? i hope it is cuz i really wana buy a new guitar
    Also, what types of things should i be looking for in terms of pickups, body etc.

    The pickups on the Les Paul, Explorer and SG are pretty much the same, humbuckers. So the differences ar emainly on the body shape. I feel that the Les Paul has a very fat, full and bassy tone. The explorer is stronger on the mids, and not so fat. Now the SG, I have never liked it. It just sounds weak on every frequency. I would go for a Les Paul no doubt. You can get some pretty heavy and strong sounds there, and also some sweet tones with the neck pick up.

    Shouldn't sound exactly the same.

    Epiphone Explorers are probably the best and most consistently well-built of Epiphone guitars, from all that I have heard and read.

    It should sound decent with the stock pickups WHICH, is not exactly the case with Epiphone Les Paul's.

    In either case, you could later have the pickups changed out. There are other great replacements that will make a $500.00 Epiphone sound like a $1000.00 Epiphone.

    A pickup change for your Epiphone SG could improve tone of that guitar too.

    I only mention that as the stock p'ups on the LPs and SG's seem to sound a bit 'shrill' and 'metal' versus warm and throaty like Edge's.
