    The pickups on the Les Paul, Explorer and SG are pretty much the same, humbuckers. So the differences ar emainly on the body shape. I feel that the Les Paul has a very fat, full and bassy tone. The explorer is stronger on the mids, and not so fat. Now the SG, I have never liked it. It just sounds weak on every frequency. I would go for a Les Paul no doubt. You can get some pretty heavy and strong sounds there, and also some sweet tones with the neck pick up.

    Shouldn't sound exactly the same.

    Epiphone Explorers are probably the best and most consistently well-built of Epiphone guitars, from all that I have heard and read.

    It should sound decent with the stock pickups WHICH, is not exactly the case with Epiphone Les Paul's.

    In either case, you could later have the pickups changed out. There are other great replacements that will make a $500.00 Epiphone sound like a $1000.00 Epiphone.

    A pickup change for your Epiphone SG could improve tone of that guitar too.

    I only mention that as the stock p'ups on the LPs and SG's seem to sound a bit 'shrill' and 'metal' versus warm and throaty like Edge's.



  3. The only song I can think of off the top of my head that Edge uses an SG on live is Elevation. I've always thought that song really exploits the SG's "shrillness" just right. I think the warmth he gets out of them is mostly due to the amp and his EQing.

    I'm not an LP player, but of all the ones I have played, I never thought any of them sounded very shrill with the stock pickups. But like I said, I've only played 1 LP for every 10other guitar I've played.

    Just my opinion.

    I've got an Epi LP, made a few years ago- the black "Goth" edition (though i would hardly define myself as such )

    For songs like "One", "Until The End of the World', "The Electric Co." and "Zoo Station", where Edge uses his LP's, this guitar through my Fender 90W amp and a Boss Distortion pedal gives me an incredibly close-to-mirroring sound. Of course, you'll never sound exactly like The Edge, but for songs especially like "One" and UTEOTW, I doubt I could get much closer.

    To clarify my post a bit.... Vintage 1966 Gibson SG isn't shrill at all.

    Newer Epiphone SG's (and newer Epi Les Paul's), with stock pickups, can be.

    While we've only seen Edge use an SG live, there is a possibility that it's been used on album tracks. If you have seen "It Might Get Loud" you've seen that Edge used the red SG during writing sessions for "Get On Your Boots".

    This doesn't mean the guitar made the final mix. I might not have. But it is equally possible that some of the guitar tracks on the song 'could' be the SG. Most songs are made from more than one guitar track and in that more than oen guitar can/is often used.

    That said, Edge can be seen using a Gretsch Country Gent during the "...Boots" writing sessions.

  8. Unfortunately no, sorry :/

    I've got a custom made setting on my Digitech RD-200 (I believe that's the model number?) Multi-Effect pedal to give me Bono's light distortion chords on "One"- Live from Chicago, '05, so I can stomp that on in the verses and use the Boss stompbox for the extra gain when The Edge plays the choruses and solos

    I'll try to get some YouTube vids up, though...nothing I've ever done before, but I could manage it. My camera is pretty crappy quality audio, but I should be able to get the idea of the sound across fairly well. Look for those over the weekend- I'll post a link.

    EDIT: I had some time right after I posted that so I decided to just make a real quick video. Sorry for the mistakes and the roughness of it all, but I wanted to experiment with it. It'll be here very shortly.
  9. Small setup for the time being. Apologize for the roughness of the playing and some of the distortion in the "One" verses are a bit too heavy, I know. My Boss Distortion is out of commission so I had to go through the amp...little harder to change on the fly.

    Just a little thing you could try f your Boss dist is out of commission like that, just try rolling back the volume about halfway when your play the distorted part of One. It should really smooth out the harshness and will probably thicken the tone up a touch.

    Thanks- I was screwing around with some settings before I turned the camera on, and I set it up for UTEOTW, and forgot that I was going to play "One" first, so it even surprised me a little bit.

    Holy fuck thats great One is a song ive never been able to get for some reason do u have sum tabs or sumthing.

    oh and btw ended up getting an Epihpone LP Custom (ebony), it was love at 1st sight, what more can i say.
