A long time ago, my first guitar teacher had a guitar on which, on the headstock where the strings were wound, he had the small colored notches on the bottom of the strings poking out through the holes. (I'm trying to find a picture of this on Google Images, and I'm having a very hard time...basically, the following part of the string was sticking about an inch out of the peg)

However, I don't believe the guitar was strung backwards. I asked him how he did it, and he told me "Just string your guitar, and save the bottoms of your old strings. All you have to do is wind those through too." But I tried this, and the holes on all 3 of the guitars I own aren't big enough for 2 strings, even if you double up the smallest/largest (eg: bottom of the 6th string gets wound in the 1st string's hole)

Does anyone have any experience with trying this? I thought it looked sort of cool, and figured I would try it out sometime.

Hmmm, that's weird. I know D'addario's, which is what I use, have coloured rings on the end, and when you play something like a les paul with a tuneomatic bridge or whatever, you can kinda see them. I've never heard of what he does though

sorry if that joke offended some of you, but don't worry, my girlfriend laughs when I make jokes like that (most of the time....)

I use D'addarios as well, and yes, those colored notches are what I'm talking about. But the configuration of what was going on was explained to me like this-

-Cut/unwind the strings off your guitar
-Save the bottom inch or two containing the colored ring
    -Restring like normal
-Feed a bit of the extra string bottoms through the tuning pegs where your new strings are
-Wind it up enough so it loops around/catches

The guitar looks sort of cool...they jut out in all different directions, and if you've got a Les Paul style headstock (3x3 pegs instead of 6 in a row, like a Stratocaster), and just an inch at the most of your string-bottoms sticking out, it looks neat and gives the headstock an abstract look.
  3. Hey just wondering what the guitar used by Edge in the Rattle and Hum Desire video? The white one? Has he used it since?

And also what guitar is he using for Ultraviolet this tour cos I saw in the Washington 92 he was using his Explorer? (Awesome melody solo in the "I was all messed up and had opera in my head" bit )
  4. Hey guys, I've been searching for a mixer lately. However, I'm having a bit of trouble finding the right one for the best price. It must have (at least) two microphone inputs and (at least) three instrument inputs. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The Desire guitar was a Gretsch White Falcon (back me up here guys) and the Ultraviolet guitar these days is a Fernandes Retro...Rocket? Again, the others will probably clarify if I've gone wrong, but I'm pretty sure those are the ones in question.

And Nick, sorry mate, haven't the foggiest! I record everything on my mp3 player =P

    Here's the answers you requested:

"Desire" and "Van Diemen's Land" in the Rattle and Hum (film) are a 1962-ish stereo Gretsch White Falcon.

    "Desire" (Rattle and Hum) video:

"Van Diemen's Land" (Rattle and Hum) video:

That said, Dallas has said that the album version of "Desire" was the 1975 Les Paul Custom (that was auctioned off at the Music Rising Icons of Music auction in 2007).

Also, during the Lovetown tour, The Edge was using a Stratocaster for (at least some if not all) live performances of "Van Diemen's Land".

As for the White Falcon, I've yet to see The Edge use it for anything in a live concert setting, other than for

"Ultraviolet (Light My Way)", during the Zoo TV tour was played on his 1976 Gibson Ltd. Ed. Explorer.

For the U2:360 tour, he's switched to a Fernandes RetroRocket. Reason? Decided to rearrange the solo and use the sustainer pickup of the RetroRocket.

I have been happy with behringer for years.

  9. Behringer seems to be pretty good, there were a couple that caught my eye. Thanks

Also, another question... would a bass sound good through a regular guitar muilti effect processor? Basically, bass -> regular guitar multi effect processor -> bass amp. Again, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  10. I knew it but backed it up with video evidence.

It's the Edge instinct of taking pleasure in the collection of date.

It could sound bottom less, guitar processors are well know for sucking bass out of the bass tone. But some of them are know to work great with a bass too. I use a Boss Cs-3 compressor and it does suck bass a little bit, very little, so it doesn't bother me, but if I played a 5 string it would be unacceptable. If you already have it, or if a friend of yours have it, try it. But don't buy one without trying first. Remember to use a decent amp. 30W combos are NOT OK, you need something which actually reproduces bass frequencies to test it.

Okay, thanks. I was just trying to see if I can get out of spending $150 before June.
