Not necessarily. I used to own a tonelab and I loved that too, it was also great for u2 tones. Most fx units can get the job done (to an extent), Edge's sound basically consists of a light compression, a low amount of overdrive, and delay. Sure you can be a purist and add on a bunch ofthings, as well as specific gear that gets his TRUE sound, but in the end, if you want Edge's signature tone you only need those three things.

good to know i need help make a shimmer effect, what does that consist of
  2. Not sure if what Andrew's looking for is perhaps the same thing I am...but I'm trying to build a sound on my multi that'll be suitable for "Mysterious Ways"...particularly the Vertigo Tour performances of the song (the Chicago DVD's MW sound is just awesome)

Anyone know what I can do/what effects to chain in to get close to that?

There is 'almost' nothing but a Korg A3 that can get that "Mysterious Ways" tone.

I've heard others and seen YouTube clips of folks claiming "look, Mysterious Ways without an A3" and invariably, the tone is not close.

Only other thing that I've heard that is in the neighborhood - sonically - is the DB-1 DiscomBOBulator Autowah. But you will hear that it's still doesn't quite get the right 'growl' or depth.

Which by the way, the DB-1 DiscomBOBulator seems to have been discontinued.
  4. So I started looking into the Korg A3....and I can't even find it anywhere

All I can find are things on eBay that are like, sound cards...what would I even do with those?

You won't find a Korg A3 new. They've not been made for years.

You will find them on Craigslist, E-bay and second-hand in second-hand/vintage guitar shops.

The Korg A3 alone will not get you Edge tones. You need the SPC-01 card. That has the sounds for "Mysterious Ways", "Zoo Station", "Numb", "Lady With The Spinning Head"...

BUT, if can find a Korg A3 - BUY IT. You can download the SPC-01 card sound files at the
    www.korgaseries.org site

Go to SPC-o1 and click on A3 on this part of the site:

I had faddled around with my old Zoom GX1 and managed to get something passable, it was a mix of phaser or flange, compression and god knows what else, and also set the expression pedal to control delay so I could whack it on for the arpeggio part. Unfortunately that pedal died and I unfortunately didn't think about writing down the variety of effects I bunged together and regret it now, but basically just experimentation with the funky stuff. If you get stick a bit of auto-wah in that might do a job. Hope that inspires you somehow!
  7. ...and this makes 13.

T'is a 2006 Gretsch Country Classic. (The name the Country Gent went under during the years that Gretsch didn't have the rights to the Chet Atkins name and the Chet Atkins model names (Gretsch regained use of the names in 2007)

This should work nicely while playing "City of Blinding Lights", "Magnificent", "I'll Go Crazy...", "Do You Feel Loved", "Please" and Popmart era "One".

  8. That is a BEAUTIFUL guitar, and yes, "City" will sound amazing on it- always wanted to play that one right

Can't imagine "Breathe" and "No Line" would sound terrible on it either.

    Great purchase!
  9. Great purchase! I remember right after the NLOTH promo tour was finished about 3 guys on the u2-sound forum bought a country gent, great guitar by the sounds of it.

I myself just purhcases a guitar as well, (definitely not as pricey ) it's an Epiphone Les Paul Custom in the discontinued antique ivory finish, or in other words, the Edge's cream 1970's les paul finish!

I plan on switching out hte stock pickups for Seymour Duncan 59's, probably switch out the tuners for better ones, probably switch out the pots, and perhaps dye the fretboard a bit or use some oil to make it darker. I'll be putting the gold schaller pickup rings around the buckers as well, so it looks like Edge's.

Gold schaller rings are the rings around the humbuckers:

I'd like to know what the little black rings are around the stopbar mounts are, could be a cool add-on to make it perfect (other than the Gibson logo that is )
  10. Don't the humbuckers sound better without the covers? You could try to take them off to see if that's true.
