I do think the Internet etc leads to a different type of frenzied anticipation. You never got this in the 90's.

I remember R&H lead-up being massive when I was a kid. U2 had just come off the back of a monster tour, they had a movie coming out, and their previous work was the biggest rock album of the 80's. It just felt like all eyes were on R&H at the time.
I remember AB being not so much anticipation but just total and utter shock with what they came out with when The Fly was released. I remember thinking "Is that really Bono? Holy shit, it is!!" And then AB exploded.
Certainly in the 'news as it happens' world we live in right now, nothing has beaten the hype around this one in the online community. I don't remember Bomb being this keenly anticipated.
