  1. 1983-05-30 - Devore, California - Glen Helen Regional Park
    Performance:
    a general good performance with the likes of New Years Day, Two Hearts beat as One, A Day Without Me and Surrender being the stand outs. And though hits such as Sunday Bloody Sunday and I will follow were far from the best i've heard, the mass cock up award goes to '40', its out of key ending and the odd 'give peace a chance' snippet, though i did like its spooky beginning

    Audience:
    its the festival so i won't be too harsh, many probably weren't there to see U2, and a few good sing alongs to songs such as Sunday Bloody Sunday give them a respectable 3.5 stars

    Sound:
    a great sounding bootleg, could be compared to the red rocks recording two shows later, 5 stars

    Overall:
    dispite the U2 coming out of the blocks with a great first 5 songs, a few bad choices performance and set wise could be seen as abit of a let down, still a great show and a great recording

  2. Rotterdam 1990-01-06:

    After the failed first attempt to download it (got stuck on 96%) , I'm now listening to it.
    This is one of the concerts that were scheduled as an extra gig after the show in Amsterdam on december 18th 1989 that had to be stopped preliminary due to problems with Bono's voice.

    This one sounds great (as does Bono's voice, BTW ).

    Overall performance: 4.5 to 5 stars (All I Want Is You is fan-tas-tic!!!!)
    Audience: 5 stars
    Setlist: 5 stars.

    This is reminiscent (as is already said in one of the reviews on the concert pages) of the Point Depot concert from 1989-12-31 (or should I say 1990-01-01, which would be more accurate since the concert starts right after midnight?).
    Anyway, this one is a great one and really a must-have for any (Dutch?) fan.

    But in this topic we're reviewing a bootleg chosen by one of the members of the Bootleg Round Table. This week Aussiemofo chose for 1983-05-30 - Devore, California - Glen Helen Regional Park
    So if you wanna post a review here, it's supposed to be about the chosen gig, the Devore one in this case

  4. 1983-05-30 - Devore, California - Glen Helen Regional Park

    Performance:

    The set gets off to a raucous beginning with an emphatic version of Gloria, and the band continue in this vein for much of the opening set up until New Year's Day - have to echo many of the plaudits re. A Day Without Me and the Dear Prudence snippet, great stuff. However, I did feel that things started to tail off with Surrender, and I felt the Let's Twist Again snippet in Two Hearts Beat As One was absolutely murdered. It's not my favourite song, and this version did little to curry much more favour with me. However, when in doubt, throw in Electric Co. - fantastic performance, even with the lengthy gap as Bono (as I understand it) goes walkies! This seemed to really get the crowd going again, and a rousing I Will Follow further sated the appetites. However, 40, wow - Bono murdered that lol! The little bits of improv. from Adam on the guitar did add to it, and I don't think the Give Peace A Chance snippet was a bad choice per se but OUCH talk about going out of tune... The band for the most part were on decent form - the clarity of Bono's voice at times was awesome, whilst the others provided a more than solid platform for Bono to play the crowds. However, 40 certainly leaves a bit of a sour taste in the mouth.

    Audience:

    To be honest, I couldn't hear them but I don't know if that was simply due to the fact that my speakers aren't amazing or whether they really were quiet - I tend to think it's a case of the former though, because at times you can really hear them cheering and screaming as any pent-up festival audience will do.

    Sound:

    The clarity of the sound is pretty good for a 25+ year old recording, but I have to question the mix - Bono's voice is the loudest thing going, whilst at times Edge barely came through. Adam and Larry were at a decent level throughout, but the balance between Edge and Bono's respective volumes was certainly a negative for me.

    Overall:

    As a rule, I'm not that fussed over the earlier years of the band's career, although I'm always up for listening to the odd boot here and then and all-in-all I wasn't disappointed. The band were on form and did a fine job in throwing out a performance that seemed to really gee up a festival crowd, but I can't say it'll be a boot that'll live long in my memory.

    Hi Harry, it's really funny reading the audio-only reviews.
    All of the things that people have a main problem with such as Two Hearts I let go because the video is so good. Two Hearts for example is an absoulte riot with Angeline dancing with Bono during the Twist snippet.

    Can I encourage anyone who has the audio-only bootleg to now download the iPod ready video. It's very worthwhile and in my view is right up there with Red Rocks (Red Rocks is better because it's a full-length concert). Also on the crowd, granted they can't be very well heard on the soundboard, but believe me they were there and really getting into it.

    @Rob, it's be great to have you on board for the next one mate.

    Good enough to enjoy it. It's not the brightest but a worthy 5-star in my book.

    Audience:
    Average, they weren't completely into it.

    Performance:
    Brilliant. A short festival and a short setlist but a very good and powerful performance. Highlights were Electric Co, Two Hearts and A Day Without Me. I missed 11 O'Clock though..and you guys know I adore that song, so that was a minor setback. And the Give Peace A Chance snippet during 40 was...erhm...painful.

    Overall:
    A very good show, I've seen bits of it on Youtube. I reviewed the audio only but I know the video is great too. U2 was in the mood these days and the War-tour was probably their best tour of the early days.

    Yeah I had a feeling there would be reasons for the various bits of nitpicking, and I would download the vid. but it's all on RS and my internet has a real issue with using RS and seeing as I don't have a premium account nor the means to get one, I just can't for the moment. What's going on with the next BRT ladels and gentlespoons? Who's up for picking next?
