1. R.E.M.: Peter Buck's main Rickenbacker gtr missing!

It's be horrible if this happened to Edge but at least Edge uses many different guitars. Peter Buck does use more than one but the missing guitar is THE Rickenbacker - Peter's MAIN guitar and the one that has appeared on every single REM album and tour.

    Here's the story:from www.remhq.com

As we reported late last night Peter's guitar went missing from the Finnair Stadium in Helsinki, Finland. Though the guitar has not yet been located, there is an active investigation and we are all hopeful that the guitar will eventually be returned. We still would like to hear from anyone with information which could assist us, which may be shared anonymously if desired:

    Email information to fanclub@remtour.com or phone (001) 706 353-6689...

Finally, we are hopeful that the guitar will eventually be found. After all, one of band's most beloved bootlegs was from Boston in July of 1983 at The Paradise, called "Return of the Rickenbacker" (a few songs from which were included on the 2006 retrospective, "The Best of the IRS Years,")

  2. How sad!!!
I hope they find it soon!!!
  3. Horrible, isn't it? That would be like someone stealing Edge's original Explorer. Sad, sad, sad.

The karma police will visit the thief.
  4. Strange thing that famous guitars are being stolen...I wonder if it was a fan who stole it or somebody who will sell it.

  5. a fan woulden't steat it, would they

  6. Maybe its the same guy that stole Jimmy Page's LP back in 1970. If hes still alive, it would make some sense.

  7. Well Gibson DID finally make a LOVELY replacement for Jimmy. But it sux rocks that someone stole Peter's main Rickenbacker.

  8. Not a fan that was 'stable'. Is someone dumb enough to TRY to sell that on eBay or a pawn shop? I do hope that they get it back and that it isnt' fecked up.
  9. How sad... I love Rickenbackers sound, and even more when it comes to R.E.M.... Moreover I'm on a REM phase lately, on the last week I've listened to and played along with REM for hours... Terribly sad, I hope they eventually find it and this topic can be closed and forgotten
  10. Rejoice.

We are very, very thrilled to announce that Peter's prized Rickenbacker guitar was returned to the band by an anonymous source late yesterday. The guitar had been missing since September 9th after it disappeared from the stage following the band's concert in Helsinki, Finland. With this sudden turn of events, Peter will now have the guitar back on stage with him at tonight's concert in Luxembourg. We wish to thank everyone who wrote in with their support and well wishes over the last ten days.

    Read the official press release:

Peter Buck’s prized Rickenbacker guitar has been returned to R.E.M. by an anonymous source.

The guitar has been an instrumental part of Peter’s arsenal both live and in the studio since 1982’s release of Chronic Town. Its loss had been well-documented in the past week since it went missing immediately after R.E.M.’s September 9th show in Helsinki, Finland.

The guitar was returned to Peter in time for tonight's sold out show at the Rockhall, Esch-Sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, where the band is currently on the European leg of their acclaimed "Accelerate" tour.

Peter Buck, visibly relieved, said: "It's great to have it back in my hands. I'm looking forward to playing it tonight in Luxembourg."

Bertis Downs, R.E.M.'s manager said: "We were always hopeful it would turn up, and thanks to the efforts of a lot of people, we are thrilled to have it back in Peter's possession. We are grateful and very happy that it worked out this way."
  11. rejoice indeed!
