Matt forget all the modern stuff, the second album, the 78 radio shows and a couple of River tour bootlegs is all you need.

Well, what I think I'll do is get the ten songs I listed through itunes (or something like it) plus a few others; assuming all goes well, get Born To Run and that "Darkness" album; and move onto a few live shows (likely the ones Dave has recommended).

A DVD might be interesting at some point but I don't even watch U2 or Pearl Jam DVD's!

Well, I just got a hold of "The Essential" collection and plan to focus on CD1 for a while...I can appreciated that fans of Bruce probably feel other....er, essential songs are missing. I know I feel that way with "my" bands. However, it's a clean starting point but I will definitely look in to the complete Born to Run and Darkness albums in the future.

Again, I sincerely appreciate all of your advise and am taking it into consideration. I know when some one asks me, "What are a dozen or so essential Pearl Jam songs that would get me into the band?" I find it virtually impossible to answer.
