In Australia singing in schools is only really done in primary. And in high school (includes middle school here) the only time you get to sing (unless you're in the choir or a musical) is in assembly where we're supposed to sing the national album.

When I say you'll get a detention, I mean you'll get a detention for disrupting the class, not for singing in general. Sometimes we sing Happy Birthday (if someone has a birthday of course) though it depends on the teacher.
