This from Guitar Player magazine... not sure if this issue is still on the stands or not.

(I don't have the magazine here at work with me so I don't remember who's on the cover but I can check that when I get home)

In this particular issue they hilighted various 'stars' guitar gear. The pictures and information on The Edge's, are circa Elevation tour. In fact, the pictures were taken in San Diego on April 17th, 2001. (I was there and saw the Guitar Player folk do so)

The GOAL is SOUL... it's EDGE-E-VATION.

Wow. That's a lot of stuff. But is it usable live unless you're accompanied by a dozen roadies plus a pro technician? For Edge it's what he needs. But for anyone playing small stages with an unknown band this rig wouldn't make much sense.

The more I look at it the more it underlines the conclusion I drew years ago: It's unneccessary to exactly "nail" Edge's or some other rock star's sound. Tone comes from the player anyway.

I'm already disappointed by the fact that I have too much live stuff to carry at once, so I have to walk twice from my car to the stage.

I can agree with that statement, for the most part. Tone does come from one's hand. And having good tone starting from one's hands help to make the guitar, effects and amp sound that much better.

Do you need what The Edge has 'exactly' or 'mostly' to obtain the sounds he gets on stage or in the studio?

No.

Those on the West Coast or that frequent Las Vegas can see LA's "The Joshua Tree. Chas from The Joshua Tree gets VERY convincing U2 tones from things like the Line 6 M13, Axe-FX and Eric Johnson model Strat.

If you are on the East Coast, Mick from NY's "The Unforgettable Fire's gets great Edge tones from some gear that Edge uses and some that he doesn't.

And I've heard clips from many on U2 Recording (Yahoo Group) that have been able to get very convincing Edge tone from alternate gear to that used by The Edge.

...Not that it is a bad thing if you DO have some of The Edge's toys.

In fact, I am awaiting clips from a friend of mine that recently obtained a DEATH BY AUDIO "Supersonic Fuzz Gun" - as mentioned by The Edge in the latest edition of MOJO (Oasis on the cover)

Of course it's not "bad" to own some toys that Edge uses himself - or things that come close. It must be nice to walk around, buy and try every effect that's known to man. I'm just trying to cover my envy.

I, for example, recently bought a Behringer Reverb Machine since it turned out to be a cheap and very convincing "shimmer" octave- up reverb. This decision came from watching an Edge guitar video. Of course I'd prefer the "real" Line6 Verbzilla... or the much more expensive thing that Edge uses.

On the other hand, the DBA stuff that I heard on their website doesn't get me excited. I'd like to know what Edge uses it for.

But as I mentioned somewhere before, I'm a player, a songwriter and my own producer - and I'm doing it merely out of passion and without real commercial ambition. So I prefer to develop my own trademark sounds and tones rather than nailing someone else's... admittedly Edge is in both artistic and commercial success far ahead of me. Very inspiring.

While you usually are used to me blathering on about guitars, amps and effects... I am only sort of new at guitars. Okay, fine... I've been playing for almost 10 years.

But I have been playing drums for 29 years.

So get pretty geeked out about drums and cymbals and cool drum parts and well played/interesting drum rhythms.

So yeah, a Roland V-drum kit... the SD20K or even one of the more affordable models would be good fun. Plus I could use it to track drums for my own music - whilst recording at home.
