Mar 8 2009 by Sarah Miloudi, Wales On Sunday

ROCKERS U2 are set to pack the Millennium Stadium with its biggest ever crowd of 85,000 in the middle of August, Wales on Sunday understands.

And it is understood credit crunch-busting tickets priced from as little as £20 will be available.

The Irish band will stage the venue’s largest concert to date when they play to adoring crowds at the Cardiff sports ground on Saturday August 22.

Tickets for the Cardiff date are expected to be released on March 14.

It will be the second time the popular four-piece has performed at the stadium, and the concert – which will be officially announced tomorrow – is expected to be one in a series of record-breaking shows unveiled on the same day.

Tomorrow, at 8am Dublin time, details of the legendary group’s Kiss the Future tour will be made public.

Along with the date in Wales, concerts for a further 95,000 fans are expected to be announced at Croke Park on July 24, 25 and 26, as well as a record-breaking gig for more than 100,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, London.

A source close to the band hinted at the grand scale of gigs planned by Bono, The Edge and co.

He said: “You’re looking at 100,000 people for U2 at Wembley.

“It will be the highest ever capacity at Wembley for a concert and is expected to be the highest ever grossing concert in the UK.”

U2 manager Paul McGuiness added: “This is going to be a very big tour, the biggest shows we’ve ever done.”

U2 first performed at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium as part of their Vertigo world tour in 2005. The band’s forthcoming show is expected to be the final in their European schedule, which is expected to kick off at Barcelona’s Nou Camp Stadium on June 30.

The band will also visit Paris, Nice, Amsterdam and Berlin.

  3. these ticket prices are crazy. Makes travelling elsewhere to see them a nice alternative.
