1. Yeah, It keeps coming back...

Even more funny is that it seems as if no-one has any idea what they're discussing here lol

Bono did say that they wanted to make an album of singles. An album where any one of the songs could top the charts. There you have the problem. If the song writer wants to make a group of single rather than an album then that CD just ain't gonna go well on the ears

I like albums of singles-The Undertones, Revolver, Substance. But if a song or a couple suck, then the whole thing is thrown off.
  3. has are topic starter not came back?

  4. No one said that. If you're referring to my post: I said that the leap from AB/Zooropa to Pop wasn't as big as the one from JT/RH to AB. If you were talking about someone else's post I missed, never mind
  5. Okay, I misread it. I'm starting to think maybe POP, ATYCLB and HTDAAB are all more or less in the same range as far as quality. We choose one or the other based on tastes, whether we like the '80s U2 sound or the expiremental '90s sound.

I would have to acknowledge that, lyrically, with the exception of Discotheque and If God Will Send His Angels, POP is more sophisticated than ATYCLB. MOFO, Please and Wake Up, Dead Man are among my favorite U2 songs. But I rather like the collection of songs on ATYCLB more than POP, mostly because of the music and the renewed optimism in songs like BD and Walk On.

To claim that Pop is more of a musical leap from AB/Zooropa than AB was from JT/RH is just ridiculous, however.

    Speakin' the truth.
  7. Well, I think these two records are incredibly good for a band that's been on the top for so long. And what I've heard of the new album seems at least as good, if not even better.

I think this is amazing. No rock band I know has been up there for nearly 30 years.

((Of course the Stones are up there, but in a the last 25 years they've always been doing, more or less, the same -- good -- songs. Maybe the last two U2 albums have a somewhat classic style, but it's not quite always the same song. This said I have a lot of respect for Jagger & co.; I hope U2's shape in 20 years will be as good as theirs now. Bowie and Lou Reed too have been up there for very long too -- I think they're great. But they haven't been *always* on the top like U2 in the last 25 years.))

If the next album is at the level of JT and AB, I'll be amazed. However, if it will be as good as ATYCLB and HTDAAB, I'll be still quite amazed too. I'd be very happy to be shown a rock record from the 00's that is as good as these two.

Of course, I agree that they are not perfect I think Grace and Peace on Hearth are a bit weak, and I agree with Bono that, although the songs on HTDAAB are almost all great, that the whole isn't as great as one would have hoped. His words were that "it sucks". They can't afford to say that again, can they? NLOTH must be and will be damn good... :-)

very nice I love Lou Reed too, def one of my favorites!
  9. Just listened to ATYCLB on the long way home from work. It's just a damn good album, classic U2 sound, full of soul, their best album after JT and AB (along with War). In fact, I listen to it more than JT and AB. That must mean something.

I feel the same way with HTDAAB, although ATYCLB is a classic.

  11. It's very hard ranking the albums after AB and the JT, they're just so different from each other, it's hard to establish what is qualitively better.
