1. Any news yet? Here in Holland it will go straight to number one I think with already platinum status (50.000 sold at least at pre-sale).

And in Britain it appears it will be the fastest selling album yet of this year, also going for the top spot:
U2's new album destined for British No. 1

LONDON (Reuters) - Irish band U2's new album "No Line On The Horizon" is destined to hit number one in Britain at the end of the week, with first-day sales of 65,000, industry figures and the Official Charts Company said on Tuesday.

The group's 12th studio album is expected to be one of the pop world's biggest in 2009, and strong sales would provide a boost for an industry struggling to reverse a downward trend in physical record sales.

The Official Charts Company (OCC) said the album had sold more than four times as many copies as its nearest rival in the first two days of the new chart week, putting it on course to be the fastest-selling album so far this year.

While U2's stature and the publicity blitz in the run-up to No Line's release on Monday virtually guaranteed it a number one slot in Britain, the outright figure is likely to be more closely watched.

The OCC did not give a figure, but Music Week publication said first-day sales were around 65,000, a total one industry expert said was impressive but not record-breaking.

The OCC said No Line would be U2's 10th British No. 1 album, putting them on a par with the Rolling Stones and Madonna and one shy of Elvis Presley. The Beatles hold the record with 15.

No Line is the group's first album in over four years and is being released by Vivendi's Universal Music Group label.

U2's last record, "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb," sold nine million copies worldwide.

Japan: 32,474 copies sold and #4.
  2. Wow. Selling fast, that's good
I hope it goes to No. 1 here

  3. Who cares about that "band" lol
However dont think GOYB was the wisest move in terms of first single to promote the album
Magnificent would have been my bet more likely
Should be interesting too see how it does over here, seens the critics wasnt that impressed here
But praised the bomb album to the sky, believe that went no. 1 here

I think it all relates to GOYB, which has proven itself to be a very bad first single. I think sales can increase a lot with new and better singles, like Magnificent.

I would have no problem with a ban on that word, just used it for comparison purposes

I think you're right about Boots Remy, i just saw a commercial here on tv promoting the new album, and what was playing GOYB, if im a casual fan or just a music lover, hearing that song in the promos doesn't make me want to run out and buy the album

I was just joking, no problem

Yep that's what I think too when I see the commercials, which are broadcasted here a lot. The commercial itself is good, but the song.. It hasn't been the smartest marketing move U2 made over the years. Too bad though. Hopefully they can draw back a few buyers with a new single and/or campaign. But there's no important single like the first.

I think they're banking on strong sales through the period of time including the tour, so while boots might not have been their strongest opening punch, i think they're hoping a successful tour and follow up singles will result in sales

  8. They're now heading for number one in the states too..

U2 on Track to Score Seventh No. 1 Album

    Billboard, March 05, 2009

    Keith Caulfield

U2 is on track to score its seventh No. 1 album next week on the Billboard 200 chart, as its No Line on the Horizon set led Nielsen SoundScan's March 4 Building chart by a wide margin.

U2 is working the U.S. TV circuit hot and heavy this week, with a five-night stand on CBS' Late Show With David Letterman and a performance scheduled for Friday, March 6 on ABC's Good Morning America. Horizon will likely charge in with the best sales week the Billboard 200 chart has seen since December, and could do more than 400,000 in its first week, if not more.

Billboard estimates the seven merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building tally -- Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, iTunes, Starbucks, Borders, Target and Anderson Merchandisers -- comprise about 60% of all U.S. album sales. The March 4 Building chart reflected unweighted sales through the close of business on Tuesday, March 3.

The band's last studio album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, was released during Thanksgiving week of 2004 and bowed with an impressive 840,000. Horizon is not expected to start with a number that large, especially since the always-busy shopping frame of Thanksgiving week undoubtedly helped Bomb's big bow. So far, Bomb has moved 3.2 million copies in the U.S.

Absolutely. I've seen pictures of the Magnificent promo CD on the web. I'm sure it'll go better than GOYB.

As for the word banning, Bono himself has suggested a few alternative expressions...

    wanker(s)

    cretin(s)

    idiosyncratic character(s)

    ... :-)

Just kidding (like Bono, right... ;-))
  10. Maybe nloth isn´t a big starter in sales but i´m sure will be much more time in the charts than the previous 2 albums and with a next singles better than boots, the tour and the reviews it will be a monster sales album this year along.
by other hand since the first listen i tougt nloth can be ranked in their top 3 (at least for me) and will be a classic album and will have massive sales in future.
