I was just wondering what others thought about this. I think Adam has had an absolute killer of an album.....I dont think his basslines have ever been this creative and I think its by far the best performance.
I think that Bono and Edge have also had a good album but I dont think there is that much guitar or lyrics which really stand out for me. Its all about Adam and Larry on this one I think.
Dont get me wrong....I think they all have had a good album and I think what Bono said about playing for eachother really comes out as this album sounds a lot more like a team effort rather than some one standing out.
But I just think that the bass playing on this album is by far the best he has ever played!
Bono nails his role perfectly on the title track and Breathe, though hardly hits the heights elsewhere, while Edge makes a few too many overly-familiar moves to rank this showing as one of his best despite the odd nice flourish here and there. Adam's work stands out a bit more than usual in places and I'd probably say that Larry joins him in being the other one of the flawless two quarters of the band on NLOTH. Eno's great on Unknown Caller, FEZ-Being Born and some of the intros, but I wish to God his presence overall was as keenly felt as some are making it out to be. Lanois, as great a contributor as he has been in the past and even on a few tracks here, I feel should maybe step down for the follow-up as the same old guitar sound seems to be really holding the band back in places on this album and I'd like to see the band really let loose with Eno and his box of tricks a la Zooropa next time out to give us the new direction I feel the band sorely need.
Everyones been talking about how bono wrote more lyrics for this than ever before but to me it really bugs me that he has a lot of his popular "sayings" from political speeches in his songs. Stand Up Comedy and Cedars of Lebanon and I'll Go Crazy come to mind.
