1. You have to remember that sales figures do not determine how good an album is

  2. Amen to that!

If I don't suddenly start to get bored with NLOTH it's going to be my favourite U2 album. It's truly amazing, IMO.
  3. Sweden:
1 Thåström - Kärlek är för dom
2 Larz Kristerz - Hem till dig
3 U2 - No Line On The Horizon
4 Sofia Karlsson - Söder om kärleken
5 Kevin Borg - The Beginning

    Boots out of Top 60
    Magnificient at nr. 54
  4. Ah well, these chart drops doesn't hold them back to rock Europe and the US this summer And it doesn't hold me back to love the album..
  5. Magnificent entered the Dutch Top 40 at 39, listening to it now at Radio 538. Boots is out of it...

  6. Now that is a good start... lol... NLOTH still at #2.
  7. None of this matters because U2 is selling tickets like crazy!!!!! Secong shows galore even in the US! Giants stadium sold out in less than an hour, 82,000 seats!!

It does seem that the standard for popularity as a band these days is becoming the sale of tickets for live shows rather than album sales. You can't illegally download a ticket

To add to Doc32's point, I'd like to distinguish between "popularity" and "allegiance." Popularity is a fickle momentary public position, like hitting #1. Allegiance is a lasting, deeply rooted emotional identification.

The two can go hand in hand, but not necessarily. (For instance, U2 had both at Joshua Tree and ATYCLB, but ONLY the latter during PoP. Mariah Carey has a lot of popularity, less allegiance. Pearl Jam has a bit of popularity, but MASSIVE allegiance.)

Even legally, people may be willing to fork over $0.99 to legally take a chance on a song that's popular for now.

But to experience a gig, you also have to fork over more A LOT more cash, find people to go, drive your way over there and invest a whole evening. I think that's a better predictor / indicator of allegiance.

    Thats a very excellent point,

i feel it's a tight line between relevance and allegiance. For example, The bigger bang tour is the highest grossing tour in history, but you'd be hard pressed to find someone at the time who thought the Rolling Stones were still relevant to the musical scene. So they are a prime example of strong allegiance but little relevance.

I personally believe U2 are still very relevant to music today. If No Line was from earlier in their career before the mass allegiance had developed, i still feel like large amounts of people would come to see their shows, but there is no way to no for sure. So it's tough to say if all these tickets are being purchased on the strength of the new album or because people just love U2
  12. Don't bash the Stones- I'm tired of hearing that shit.
