I have noticed that during some songs, like "Streets", that Larry and Edge have to play their instruments in the dark, at least for part of the song. How can they do this? Repetition? Minimal lighting? It just seems to me that it would be really hard to not see your instrument in front of you.
Yes after 20 years they should be able to play with their eyes closed
+ Camera's do not capture darkness as well as your own eyes. Plus it might have been intentional to capture it darker than reality in those cases. They can fool you with lightning tricks, camera settings, postprocessing etc
When I read the title, I thought that this was going to be an 18+ topic
But yes, after 20 years or whatever it has been, I'm sure that they can play with minimal visual help... plus, the cameras do not capture what is actually being seen by the band.
We practiced and rehearsed in darkness occasionally. It helps setting your eyes free from staring at your fretboard, so you can look at each other and the audience when gigging. If you stare at your own guitar for a whole gig it can get kinda boring for your listeners.
Indeed, I'm not a professional guitar player and nevertheless I can perfectly play in the darkness without messing out the notes. This guys have been playing their instruments for 30 years, they're pretty proficient at it
