At one point, the commentary said 'these scenes are almost identical to how they would have been 100 years ago' or something like that, and my housemate and I thought 'yeah, that's half the problem, we're just stuck in the past'.

That is a bit of a mindfuck. I don't envy them for that zoo-like spectacle that they have become, but other than that, it's just old school now.
