Oscar winners, XRT favorites and former lovers Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova will part ways as The Swell Season to embark on other endeavors. The news comes shortly a fan committed suicide during a performance in Saratoga, California, however the tragedy has nothing to do with the band’s breakup.
Hansard has announced plans to rejoin his former band The Frames, while Marketa Irglova intends to record a solo album.
Hansard told Spinner.com, “I’ll go back to the Frames, and Marketa will make her own record at some point. This band (Swell Season) will eventually naturally end. But right now, all of us are just so grateful.
“Getting together and making music with Mar was a side thing for me, but it felt absolutely right. I followed through on it even when it felt like I might’ve been abandoning my band a bit. But I had to follow through. I knew there was something in this that I had to follow through on.”
And he has every faith that his Swell Season partner, once co-star and former lover will make every success of a solo career: “I love the way she writes. I think she’s an incredible songwriter and I think she could make a really beautiful, beautiful record… I’m very, very proud of her.”
Folk rockers Swell Season's Thursday night, August 19 concert in Saratoga, California ended in tragedy when a concertgoer jumped to his death during the show.
Oscar winners Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, the stars of hit film "Once", and hundreds of their fans were left horrified as the unnamed man took his own life by diving from the roof of the venue to the stage below during the Mountain Winery concert.
Hansard had just finished performing a song and was talking to the crowd when the man jumped, falling three stories through lighting rigs. The Irish singer/songwriter promptly halted the show and walked over to the man on the stage while medics attempted to revive him.
A statement from Hansard and his band reads, "The band, crew and all involved with them are shocked and saddened by the unfortunate events of last night. Their hearts go out to the victim and his friends and family."
Local reports suggest the unidentified fan agreed to accompany a friend to the show but left his seat after the first song. The incident is being treated as an apparent suicide.
