1. I believe what Lyndon is saying is that if they're not going to come out with something like BD or Vertigo that has potential to be a radio hit, he'd rather have something like UC which is definitely not going to be a hit but is outstanding musically.

  2. Who knows they didn't release it as a single. Most non u2 listeners I've played it to like the song - but I admit I can't see it as a big hit on today's radio.

But yeah, my point was that UC is an amazing song on a musical level (the bridge has to be one of the all time greats) and I would rather have it than an album of 3-4 minute hit singles - a balance of both might be good but only if the 'hits' are good - the weakest songs on NLOTH were the hit single type songs - GOYB, SUC - If they're going to do the same on SOA I would much rather have an album of innovative, interesting songs like UC.

Too bad you won't hear it live then.

It failed big time live, otherwise it would still be there.

What I want is either great pop/rock (like PD or Vertigo) or something musically interesting (like UC, Being Born, MoS, NLOTH etc) ideally a mix of both.

Actually - to tell you the truth it doesn't so much matter what they do as long as they do it well.

That was the problem with NLOTH - execution, songs like GOYB, SUC were great in concept but the end product could easily have been better (in most cases this is due to Bono's cringeworthy lyrics making the song sound stupid).

First of all we haven't even heard teh full versions of EBW or North Star yet (or studio versions), and plus since when do singles have to be fast paced?

  5. UC? It failed just because most of the audience didn't know the lyrics that were meant to be sung by them. But the song itself was pretty good live.

Yea, their performances of the song were fantastic for the most part, Bono had no problems singing (unlike say TUF) it and Edge nailed the solo, which really added some Stairway to Heaven type vibe to the show.

The karaoke thing and the chorus reprise they did at the end detracted from the song - made a serious song seem frivolous like Boots or Elevation or something.

They should just have told the crowd to sing along to the choruses and not have the lyrics on screen (which just confused everyone), the chorus line is simple and I'm sure the audience would be able to sing along to the 'oh oh oh oh' parts.

All their hit singles in the past decade have been faster paced songs - I think because people expect an old band to sing slow songs, which make singles like these less likely to succeed.

Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own and Stuck In A Moment were hits, yet they weren't exactly fast-paced.

  9. True, but they were nowhere near as big as Vertigo, BD or even Elevation were.

The final karaoke part worked in the cities that fitted it. Bar-ce-lo-na was the best one.
  11. I stll don't think they're going to put it on SOA, but Mercy would make a killer first single.
  12. Don't count on Mercy. They wouldn't have released it on WAIE if they had further plans with it.
