    Let me ask this,did the Pop cd do well in Europe ? So many Europeans talk about it like it was an epic release.Like it outsold JT and AB combined. I thought it bombed all over.Maybe Im wrong.

    I see what you're saying and I agree with everything. On a some days I think Elevation and Vertigo are better than Popmart and vice-versa.I think popmart had some moments of greatness, I think more than Vertigo.

    I think the setlists on Popmart were really strong, every other song was new Mofo / I Will Follow / Gone / Even Better / Last Night on Earth / Until the End / if god will (although this was dropped) / I Still haven't / staring at the sun / etc etc. great way to incorporate new and old in one night

    I really like the Pop album soo I think that's where we can agree to disagree. Just cuz i liked most of that album and you did not doesn't mean we can't be civil. I agree though about the US, it just didn't work. the south american and european bootlegs though show it as being AMAZING SHOWS, some of U2's best in their career in my opinion (Leeds, Santiago, Mexico, Sarajevo)

    Still it's great that we have an era like this, one that divides and has such a strong idealogy amongst fans, some hate it, some love it but at the end it's U2 and they were trying to be different and unique and keep it interesting not only for us but for themselves. And I respect that
  3. I will always have a fond memory of the actual tour as it was the first time I saw the band live. (Leeds Aug 28th 1997) Actually came across this website whist looking for a good recording of it. On the night, the band were excellent (despite the rain) and I thought mixed up the setlist with old and new songs very well.

    That said, the actual album is far from being my favourite. The songs seemed to work slightly better in the live setting, particularly Gone and Last Night on Earth for me. Never been a fan of Discotheque or Velvet Dress. Many of the songs were just "ok" - Please, IGWSHA, Do You Feel Loved. Rarely listen to the album compared with AB. ATYCLB, JT

    Achtung Baby was the one for me, where I could listen to all 12 tracks and love each one. Sad to say I was too young to go and see the Zoo TV tour. But in my own opinion the band have never bettered this album. (or tour)
  4. There's something I love about U2 when they're flawed, when something is imperfect or slightly unfinished the humanity sort of leaks into it, and blends with the flowing truth that embodies them so wholly.

    me too and it was my first gig ever! probably the best day of my life in terms of an excitement that i've never felt before or since

    truly great days they were. to me U2 felt more like a band and less like a corporation back then. i was round my mates the other day and i found a copy of Q magazine from january 97 and U2 were in it to pick up the inspiration award and one of the sentences said something like "if the rumours that their next release is going to be a trip hop album are true then thats the reason they are an inspiration" i thought it summed up nicely what the band were about back then and reminded me of how i felt about them at the time - the anticipation of waiting for the new U2 album and knowing it would sound like nothing they had ever done before.
  6. Popmart was definately interesting. Having attended several shows on that tour, it was very clear U2 were trying to create a spectacle, but much more than just an assault such as the ZOO TV tours. While the album which it supported was admittedly weak, I feel they did a very good job of making something special from the..let's admit it(Holy Joe KMart incident) thrift store rags to the likes of walking thru Times Square on New Years Eve or hitting the high tech skysrappers of Shanghai during the Chinese New Year... They simply made lemonade from lemons(pardon the repundant pun) and proved that by fighting against the grain of the fabric that is inherently U2, they can still produce a tour which still leaves me in awe when watching the Mexico DVD. So my answer is Love..clenched fist to the heart..and respect for the Popmart tour. Peace from Canada.
  7. It was great,It was such a creative tour and had thematic idea that could have donimated the time.(1997,1998)
    But no that didn't happen.At least not the way I expected.
    The opening set was amazing,Bono was dynamic,and until Staring At The Sun,the crowd had the energy.(Talking about a few bootlegs here,so it is ok)
    And the Encore was amazing,I mean by the real meaning of the word.
    But come on,what is wrong with it ?
    Setlists.
    I think the setlists made it boring.

  10. What was wrong with it was that they were in over their heads and didn't really know how to properly deal with that and the crowd at the same time. Which is precisely why 360 is succeeding: They've figured that out.

    Indeed. Which is why I don't think it's a stretch to say that the 360 tour is possibly their best tour ever.


  12. ZooTV will always have a special place in my heart (it was monumental) but you MAY be right.
