I bought Funeral first, then got Neon Bible, and it had to grow on me before I could really love it. Funeral is an easier album to get into, I think. Neon Bible is dark, but truly beautiful and melodic.

Well the critics did agree, Neon Bible didn't appear on any top 10 albums of the decade lists, Funeral did. And isn't Funeral also dark? And beautiful and melodic (indeed more melodic than Neon Bible, which is more gritty).
I shall listen to both again though and see.
Yes Funeral was dark, but I always got this feeling of hope in it, but in Neon Bible it felt much more grim.
