On December 24, 2009, Glen Hansard of The Frames & the Swell Season was joined by fellow Irishmen Bono (U2), Damien Rice and Mundy for a busking session outside Captain America's on Dublin's famed Grafton Street.
The impromptu performance raised money for Simon Community, an organisation which serves Ireland's homeless population.
The one hour set included Bob Dylan's "Knocking On Heaven's Door", Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" and Mic Christopher's "Heyday," among others.
Several fans have posted excerpts on YouTube.
Grafton is also the street where Glen Hansard's character performs in the Oscar-winning film 'Once', which co-stars his partner in the Swell Season, Marketa Irglova.
Bono and Hansard have previous. Glen Hansard sang during the funeral of Eunice Kennedy Shriver last year. Shriver helped change the world’s perception and treatment of the mentally disabled. In the sixties, she founded the Special Olympics which U2 have had some involvment you'll recall. The Kennedy family had originally contacted Bono about doing something at the wake and funeral. However, Bono was unavailable due to the 360 tour , but he phoned Hansard and asked him to fill in. Hansard revealed this on Irish radio last year. It was a really interesting tale of Bono behind the scenes.
