  1. i am sure that if this band had been from the UK or the US they might possibly have been one of the biggest bands of the last 10 years... - they were however from norway so i'll be quite surprised if many of you outside that country (or greece where they were v popuar) will even have heard of them - but they are one of my favourite bands of all time so if you have never heard of them hopefully this thread will change that! and if you have heard of them then

    i first heard them back in either 2003 or 2004 - i was in bed falling asleep, as usual with my radio on (a habit i used to have) and their song 'majesty' was played:
    the beauty of it actually made me wake up, sit up and turn my radio up but unfortunately the dj didn't bother to mention the name of the band so i was forced to sit up late at night for days and hope the song would be played again and the name of the band be revealed... eventually i found out it was madrugada and so then managed to get hold of a fair few of their songs and became a casual fan. a few years later i eventually got round to acquiring every album and pretty much every other EP and bside ever released and since that time they very quickly became one of my all time favourite bands - there is a darkness and melancholy that seems to flow through their music that does something to me that not many other bands can do. and some of the lyrics really blow me away (specially as english is not their first language!)

    unfortunately and tragically though, on july 12 2007 their guitarist, robert buras was found dead, guitar in hand in his oslo apartment and the band was over... how i wish i had gotten into them sooner and been able to see them live.


    it's very hard to sum this band up as each album is pretty different but here are a few select tracks (in chronological order) a kind of extensive beginners guide if you will!:

  2. I didn't bother to hear it yet, but the name of the band is very odd. I mean, it is a word in portuguese. Was it intentional? Or maybe it has some other meaning in another language.
  3. It's also a spanish word, meaning "after midnight/early morning"... I´ve heard only 2 of those videos and I have to say that I pretty much like them! I might listen some more
  4. yeah i read it is a spanish/portugese word which means dawn or 'the blue hour'.

    and glad you like it and hope you get to listen to some more when you have a spare minute or ten!

  5. I would say it is more like the "dead of night" Anyway, I heard one song and I didn't like it much, maybe I need to hear some more.

    It doesn't have any other meaning in Norway, but it's quite fitting considering the music


    Cool to see a topic on the band here, I've been a fan since about 98 when I saw them on their first tour in Norway.

  8. I like The Frontman and Stories From The Streets a looooot

    Oh, and Only When You're Gone sounds like a Johny Cash + Leonard Cohen + Eric Clapton mash to me, and that means it's a great song too



  9. wow you must have seen them live loads of times! (jealous!) guess you probably met them a fair bit too as you've been a fan since the very beginning?! any stories/memories?

    it's a shame i missed them on the very few times they came to England - like i said i hadn't even heard of them til about 2004 and unfortunately didnt become a really big fan til after Robert Burås died....


    and glad your liking what your hearing likeasong there's loads more to hear!

    I haven't seen them too many times actually(3 or 4 I guess) since they weren't always touring in my area. And when it came to travelling to Oslo to see a gig, I had to save up money to see the big international bands coming through.

    But in the beginning they were very shy on stage. They opened a student festival at a place I studied in support of The nightly Disease, and a lot of people were disappointed by the introverted performance. But Sivert Høyem(like Michael Stipe) has developed to be more comfortable as a frontman, and the band were a great live draw later on.

    I'm actually seeing Høyem solo on Friday at a festival. He always plays a few Madrugada-tunes like The Kids are on high Street and Majesty. And possibly my favourite:





  11. That might be my least favourite by them, so I urge you to check out more if you like that one. Industrial Silence, or maybe Grit which was recorded in Germany.

    thats interesting - i haven't seen any very early films of gigs but in the later ones i've seen on youtube (oslo spektrum 05 etc) like you say they looked really amazing live. funny the comparison you make to michael stipe as on a lot of songs he sounds remarkably like him and some people might say looks a bit like him too with the baldness...

    i recently 'acquired' sivert hoyem's solo albums and i especially like 'exiles' - i'll have to keep my eye out for him coming to UK although i'm not living in London at the moment which is probably the only place he'll play...

    i also got hold of the my midnight creeps album 'histamin' and about half of their first album (another band i wished i could've seen)... so unbelievably sad about robert buras,,, and a bit of a mystery too - very strange how his cause of death has been kept so secret... he seemed like a really nice guy and i love his style of guitar playing... such a shame..

    and yeah honey bee is a great song - i really love that whole album too.. valley of deception is great and the last song is especially poignant when you know the whole story behind it.. think i have to say my favourite album is industrial silence though - amazing debut.

    being a fan of this band has made me realise how much great music comes out of norway that no-one else really knows about. maybe i should move there and join a band there?! after 10 years of being in a band here i've pretty much given up on the UK music scene...
