1. Strange leg so far. Never have the band threw out so much material without a new album. It's unheard of. We got that ''we love you'' song on Elevation but already this leg we've had Stingray, North Star, Glastonbury, Every Breaking Wave, Batman and even Mercy. This imo is a massive departure for U2 and has to be praised (despite the quality of the sonngs).

So the discussion is what has happened? Why have U2 grew a set? How long can it continue and what may come next?
  2. I think they knew that the previous legs were a bit on the safe side. Also they promised new material.

Also it seems the band is in a period now that they really do what they want. NLOTH didnt do that well and maybe they regret decisions while making the album. Now it looks like they just want to have a good time, without worrying about sales, hitpotential or anythin.

    And I like it!
  3. I think its great they try all those new songs, but still we are complaining about some old song .
I think with a new album coming out, in this winter or next years spring we wil maybe get some new songs on the next leg, I think they will use the next European gigs to improve the new songs, and in the new leg they will play some new songs again. Im just hoping they also will bring some songs from the past like Bad, EBTTRT, Gloria and TTTYAATW (because they have been rehearsed before).
  4. Maybe because their latest album didn't do so well (i.e, sales, chart topping songs, NO grammys) they've started to realize that their chances of staying mainstream are getting slimmer, and they're getting older, so they're going to cater more to the fans that have stuck around.
  5. What I really appreciate is that U2, after a long time, actually do what they said they would. They promised some new stuff - and there it is, and I think there still could be a few more coming. The third leg is definitely the best of the whole tour so far (Bono sounds oh! so good, best since mid 90's), wonder what the show will look and sound like in America. I have to admit that U2360° has become my favourite tour just after ZooTV.
  6. Agree been a nice departure this leg with the new stuff - I wonder if they were influenced in any way by R.E.M's approach to their last Album Accelerate. They roadtested their album with a week of shows with mainly new songs to guage feedback - and as a result released their best work in years.

Nothing ever gets said now though from what I have read about Songs of Ascent - have my doubts now that this will ever see the light of day.
  7. I really hope so. Then a Give Mercy Back campaign may work

They did the same in 95 already. Nice concept, imho.

As for U2, this leg seems to develop. Looks like they've freed themselves from some chains since Horsens. Good to see.
  9. I'm loving this. It's really good to see U2 play new songs on the road. I really like Stringray, great intro imo. North Star is a great piece put together by them, something I'd like to see done full band along with Every Breaking Wave. About EBW, it's a good song but definitely needs improvement. Glastonbury is alright, first time I heard it, reminded me a tad of Boots but it got to me and I started to like it. But it is a good thing to see that they've dropped at the current moment to try other stuff out. And Mercy, I'm not a big fan of the studio version but the version in Zurich was top class and I really liked it. I'm up for more new songs to be played and for other new songs to be played.
  10. Im not convinced they are doing this because they 'love what they're doing' or finally grew a pair. I think they want to distract us from the fact that NLOTH was a failure commercially and even artistically in many aspects. It's kind of frustrating because they are no longer promoting it so we lost Unknown Caller, Breathe, and the title track (!). Although I'm always down for new songs it seems they want to get rid of NLOTH from our peripheral and move on. Which I think is a good thing but this is different from ZooTV. On ZooTV when they released Zooropa, you didn't see them move on and drop half of the Achtung Baby songs...
  11. I know.

    It's only rock and roll.

    But I like it.
  12. I'm as surprised as anyone about what has transpired on this leg. I'm not sure if i agree that them testing new material on the road means they are "giving up" on being relevant in any way shape or form though. To me it seems like the two are kind of connected. They're frustrated with how No Line turned out after months and months of work on it by themselves. So they want so instant feedback on their work from the people who they hope will buy/listen to it. If the fans, especially the casuals who attend the show like the new stuff they hear, they might be more willing to buy an album or download a track.
