  3. As a foreigner I still cannot understand how the unions got the powers they do in the USA.

    Here they just negiotiate sector contracts and they offer some limited help if you have problems with your boss.

    From what I read, there in the US its like the mob with their protection money.

    Technically that is inacurate. The mob is much more cost effective.
