1. The way the drums and bass are structured is close to Miami - which is great as that one's in my top ten U2 songs.

Still, it was a poor choice by all involved to choose it as the first single. It should have been Magnificent, Crazy and then Breathe. The reaction it got from people I know ''Oh it sounds like some sort of weird pop hybrid'', ''It's absolute shit'' etc etc, ''U2 have gone industrial (?!)'' - it didn't do what Vertigo and Beautiful Day did for the mainstream, but it sure as hell did what Discotheque did.

Yet the 20 second snippet we got to hear before the release really made me think at the time this album was going to be different. In places it is (Fez, MoS, Unknown Caller) but others it just seems same shit different year. I'm not expecting it to be played in any future tours regularly - I can't see anything besides Magnificent making it to another tour or even a best-of.

Fez is by far the best song on the album and the best B-side goes to Kingdom. Still like Winter but I find these two songs are weirder and more experimental (for U2, at least) so therefore, they happen to be the best ones for me now and I'm pretty sure it'll not change for a while.

I feel like Boots and Magnificent will be the only songs that live on from NLOTH. 2 songs from this album til they're no longer touring seems about right. Idk I think Boots is decent but it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth because it failed them </3 should have been the eccentric return to form.
  3. Reposting this from elsewhere, apologies if you've seen it before. Instead of giving the songs a score out of 10, the aim is to sum up each song in 3 words.

No Line on the Horizon: Close To Awesome
    Magnificent: Bible Allusion Disco
Moment of Surrender: Soul Baring Angst
    Unknown Caller: Tries Too Hard
I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight: Better Played Live
Get on Your Boots: Frequently Misinterpreted Lyrics
Stand Up Comedy: Self Referential Rocker
Fez – Being Born: Gorgeous Watercolour Postcards
White as Snow: Overwritten Overwrought Dirge
    Breathe: Missed Hit Single
Cedars of Lebanon: Wistful War Correspondence

    You're a poet, eh?

Well stated - and I think I agree with most, if not all, of your statements.

  5. I kinda wanna try that.

No Line on the Horizon: The Perfect Opener
    Magnificent: Intro Beats Verses
Moment of Surrender: Honest, Pure, Baring
    Unknown Caller: Fun, Different Tune
    Crazy Tonight: Poppy? So What.
Get On Your Boots: Departure From Standard
Stand Up Comedy: Almost Halfway Decent
    Fez: Brilliant Concept Executed
White As Snow: Quiet Peaceful Indifference
    Breathe: Surprising Tour Opener
Cedars of Lebanon: Scary, So Raw

This makes it sound like a better album than it really is imo
  7. They obviously like ATYCLB better than NLOTH.

Thats because ATYCLB was a miles better album, its a classic!

I still like NLOTH,in fact 2 years on i like more than i used to,except boots which is still horrendous and it is of no surprise how poorly received it was.Even live i don't like it,i get embarrassed listening to it i mean sexy boots, foxy boots and that let me in the sound bit is cringe worthy!

Magnificent and Boots i guess will live on in future tours, but i hope not,i'd rather Magnificent,Breathe and No Line.

    Overall 7/10 for the album.

These are awesome. I agree with virtually every one you've written (except WAS). I'll give it a try:

No Line on the Horizon: Loud Swirling Whirlpool
    Magnificent: Dance Floor Rave
Moment of Surrender: Beautiful Humbling Confession
    Unknown Caller: Sunday Morning Chimes
I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight: Youthful Bubblegum Slogans
Get on Your Boots: Catchy Spinning Single
Stand Up Comedy: Wannabe Zeppelin Weakness
Fez – Being Born: Slow Shining Catharsis
White as Snow: Haunting Winter Hymn
    Breathe: Elastic Streetcorner Waltz
Cedars of Lebanon: Strong Subtle Finisher
  9. Unknown Caller [11111111111/10]

Not sure if I'm intelligent enough to figure out if "Bible Allusion Disco" could possibly have anything to do with Magnificient. I would've called it "Unforgettable Fire Type Near Classic."
"Bible Allusion Disco" would seem to be a more apt description of that terrible remix of Crazy that every soul on this site thinks is so great. To me the crazy mix is simply taking a song that sounded a bit like Walk On, and turning it into a song like a Pop leftover.

And as far as what songs will they play live in ten years off of NLOTH? I think it depends on their future album sales. I think the sales figures NLOTH have are more representative of cd sales dropping than the actual quality of the album. Clasic Rock radio only plays 4 or 5 U2 songs in the rotation anymore, and Boots was only there for maybe two weeks before they went back to playing the same old 4 or 5 songs.

So if sales continue to fall, maybe Magnificent will survive, but I am scared that I will be at U2's final farewell concert in 2030, and they will be playing that Crazy Remix.

    Along with the ATYCLB revival.
