  1. Just woke up...

I still can't believe they closed with Out Of Control... It's kinda surreal.
  2. U2, Achtung Baby and Larry Mullen are all still trending on twitter in the UK. Pretty damn proud of what they did. There's still those who moan but fuck them, they're simple minded if they don't respect the fact that U2 came out of their comfort zone and took a huge risk. I think it paid off too.
  3. I don't think there wasn't anything "risky" as such, besides finishing with Out Of Control and maybe playing Streets as 6th song...
But I prefer it like that. This crowd was not a Point Depot full of U2 fans waiting to be rocked out with Gone, Acrobat and God Part II... This crowd definitely needed well chosen setlist with a lot of energy from the band - and that's what they got. Risky or not, last night's set was very well chosen, the running order was fantastic (I wouldn't have gone from UTEOTW to One, it somehow killed the rockier mood, but anyway) and they pulled out a great performance. The crowd knew that, and although they were quite cold (pun intended) at some points, they gave a warm response to the band as a whole (don't forget that the 95% of this crowd bought their tickets before U2, Coldplay or anyone were announced as headliners, right?) and to most songs in particular. Warmest responses happened during One, I Still Haven't Found, Stay, Bad and Pride, although you could tell that the audience was going to love prety much everything the band decided to play.

I'm proud to be a U2 fan today.
  4. Just woke up too. Surreal night. What a shown what a performance, sadly it's all over.

Come to think of it, the setlist was absolutely nuts: there were no weak songs for the whole setlist, and almost every song in the main set managed to rock harder than the former. Even Streets wasn't as much of a climax.
And the opening and the closing songs were simply epic.

I'm glad I lived to see that, really.

  5. Which is a huge DOWN point... Man, that song is designed to be not just 'a' climax but 'THE' climax of a live show... They could have started with it, but since they decided not to, the best option was leaving it to set closer, encore opener or even show closer. (Or second to last song, followed by I Will Follow or Out Of Control).

Nevertheless, I'm glad I lived it too
  6. It's a down point allright, but it shows how strong the performance was

Even Better definitely utterly rocks as an intro.

  7. From 3:10 look at Edge he is like: What the hell is Bono doing, he lost the lyrics again. :P

  8. Just had a great evening watching the show in HD from my livingroom. The visuals were great and I thought the whole set was pretty exciting. I was actualy moved by the beauty of One and the very song of it in its most basic, elemetal form. It was a real joy to see the original images and how the worked so well. Out Of Control was, of course, the real highlight.

But let's get back to reality. Did people honestly expect the band the play a setlist full of obscure songs and rarities for a huge festival like this? One thing to recognize is that Glastonbury is nothing like a U2 concert. Not everybody in attendance is necessarily a U2 fan. Some people are there for the other acts as well. The best way to cover the field and deliver a stellar performance is to make sure the setlist is strong and full of hits. Above all else, the biggest challenge for the band was to make sure that the performance was all about the music. U2's previous tours have been well known for their excellent visuals and and technical aspects. In the case of Glastonbury, U2 needed to show that they could deliver a stunning set without all the bells and whistles. Regarding all of these challenges, U2 definitely rose above and beyond those expectations. The setlist full of hits made the band highly accessible to the entire crowd, even those who didn't know all of the obscure songs they have been playing over the tours. Additionally, they added what I call a nice treat for long time fans. The visuals used are reminiscent of U2's prior tours, including ZooTV, Vertigo, Elevation, and the 360 Tour. The band had a stellar performance and they definitely worked well with the crowd. If you want evidence of that, just listen to the crowd singing to One and ISHFWILF. We can say that U2's Glastonbury performance was many things, but a failure it definitely was not.

Post of the week. I didn't know that tickets were sold before they announced who was playing. Really helped put things about the fest/setlist in perspective.
  10. Oh yeah, and Boots is awesome.
  11. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Easily one of the best U2 performances ever. Certainly one people will be talking about for a while too.

The whole band was on fire. The set list was spot on! They rocked the hell out of the the place. And, what I still find hard to believe that these guys are in their 50's and they are as energetic and pumped as they have ever been. I am so glad they showed the world who is boss when it comes to a good live show.

I was really surprised by Bono's singing. Lately his singing has been getting better and better. He had a moment where you could tell that being back on the smokes was affecting his voice again, but that seems to have went away. I don't know what he is doing, but it sure as hell is working. His voice was clean, powerful and melodic. The best I have heard him sound in a while.

These guys have still got a lot more life left in them yet.
