Since we did a comparison of PJ and Radiohead's releases,I think we should really compare Soundgarden vs Pearl Jam this time...the battle of Seattle.....I will let you guys go first.

The first couple of Soundgarden releases Im not that wild about,and didnt know of them until I saw Singles,then I bought Badmotorfinger..REST IS HISTORY.......this should be interesting....

IMO,this is how Vitalogy SHOULD hve been released....

The flow is quite nice,without those 4 awful,PJ trying to be the Beatles doing Revolution #9 nonsense...Stupid Mop??.really Ed ??...this was of course the start of EV's hostile takeover.

I Got Shit/Long Road are from the following year though,recorded during Merkin Ball, with Uncle Neil.They really dont have anything to do with Vitalogy.

As far as I know,Hard To Imagine was around during the Vs sessions,and the version on Lost Dogs is said to be from those sessions.But it did pop up again during Vitalogy.

"Hard to Imagine", a song previously rejected from Vs., was also recorded during the Vitalogy sessions.This version found its way on to the soundtrack for the 1998 film,Chicago Cab."Hard to Imagine" is also included on the 2003 rarities compilation,Lost Dogs,however that version is the one from the Vs. sessions.According to Gossard, "Hard to Imagine" was cut from Vitalogy because it "didn't fit with the other songs the band was writing at the time"."Out of My Mind",which is featured as a B-side on the "Not for You" single,was premiered on the band's 1994 spring tour of the United States and was played twice.According to Vedder, the song was "just a live improv".

I know but they gotta be put with ONE of the albums....the similar packaging also makes me link the two (Vitalogy and Merkinball) - as well as the two songs being played on the 1995 tour.

Pearl Jam vs Soundgarden

Ten ***** > Ultramega OK ***... even if BMF was Soundgardens debut,nothing can beat 10.

VS ***** > Louder Than Love *** ...VS is amazing....no debate here.

Vitalogy **** > Badmotorfinger **** ...this was close,real close...maybe a = is more fair,as Vitalogy is a broken record.4 awful "songs" take this classic down a full star.I would not argue,if anyone states Badmotorfinger is better than Vitalogy,as many have.Jesus Christ Pose,Outshined,Rusty Cage and Searching With My Good Eye closed are absolute 90's classics.But Nothingman,Better Man,Immortality,STBC and Not For You are so epic,they defeat BMF's greatness IMO.Vedder's hostile takeover of PJ is evident here.

No Code *** < ***** Superunknown... no contest..Soundgardens gem of gems,one of the best releases of the decade.....No Code has some great songs,they are there,but the recording's are awful. Vedder's hostile takeover is now complete.He mumbles his way throughout the entire recording,making it unlistenable.The PJ sound,as we knew and loved,is gone,the demo/flat/uninspired/dry/dead sound is in....as are the PJ record sales.

Yeild *** < Down on the Upside **** I went maybe a decade,since I last listened to Soundgardens last '90's release,as a few of their records I somehow lost.The start is very solid,dips a bit after,but this release is really good,4 stars easily for me.Mabye 16 songs is 3 too many ? Pretty Noose,Dusty,Blow Up The Outside World,Burden in My Hand,Tighter & Tighter and Overfloater all sound so crisp and clean,as PJ USED TO SOUND.I have probably gone the same length of time,since I last listened to Yeild,and no,I didnt lose it.Yeild is yet another dead redording....flat..and pretty much just sounds awful.A shame,as there are some buried treasures in there.....somewhere.. beneath the dullness of Yeild...which follows No Code,as having a quiet, quick,and painless death on the charts.

Live on Two Legs ****1/2 = I-5 ****1/2 What's this ? PJ rockin' out ? Sounding like that early 90's group Pearl Jam from Seattle ?? Red Mosquito,GIVEN TO FLY,Hail Hail and DO THE EVOLUTION have some serious balls live....GTF actually goes straight into my top 10 PJ songs,after PJ blow me away at MSG in 1998.A few more from No Code (Sometimes,In My Tree and PT) and Yeild (Faithful,In Hidding,Brain of J) should have been on this,in place of MFC and Fuckin' Up,or maybe a double album could have been in order. I-5 is very very good as well,it is missing a couple of top songs (My Wave,Pretty Noose and Superunknown) but it really is a solid collection of their 90's tunes.I have the exclusive with the soundchecks,Somewhere and Room a Thousand Years Wide sound amazing.I went with a virtual tie here.

It would be nice if 2 Legs gets a remaster,and maybe 10 more from the 98 tour are added.

Since Soundgarden brokeup for close to 16 yrs,I thought I would compare PJ's last release Backspacer,to King Animal.Not that PJ really released much in the 2000's,as far as a great record.

Backspacer ***1/2 < King Animal *****..not much to say here really...Soundgarden's comback is a masterpiece....Backspacer has its moments,but the best tunes are Vedder's solo acoustic ballads The End and Just Breathe,which would have fit in quite nicely on Into the Wild.The rest of the album is good,Unthought Known,Amonst the Waves and Speed of Sound are very good....my question is this,would Matt Cameron have brought in the Fixer to Soundgarden ? I think Kim, Chris and Ben would have laughed their asses off,I could picture Ben saying "Are you fuckin' serious Matt ??"

IMO,King Animal blows away anything PJ have put out since Vitalogy...which begs the question..did the wrong band break up in 1997 ??

You've got to have some of the strangeness in there. 'Aye Davanita' is crap and 'Pry, To' is pointless. I think the first three songs make it an outrageous introduction to this album.

Nevertheless, it's an astonishing album. Shame its flow isn't magnificent.

I don't mind strangeness Kieran,but those "songs" are just noise....Stupid Mop is the worst of the lot....when you think Hard To Imagine was passed over for a second time, you have to wonder as to why ?

We know why,this was Vedder trying to be as non commercial as possible..he wanted to seem "artistic",and "trendy"...deaden the sound.....his feelings were hurt by Cobain's mocks....he actually withheld Better Man for years,Brendan O'B had to beg him to include it on Vitalogy....its really a shame,as No Code could have been an epic release,if it was recorded properly.Its too bad Stone and Jeff let him sabotage No Code and Yeild.
