Pre-Set: like sometimes happen Eddie comes out on stage for a short set so he can entertain the waiting crowd (it’s always good to go to the venue early .. you never know hehe), enjoy and warm-up himself and take confidence with the people there. Nice pre-set
- Last Kiss: good so they don’t play later hehe
- It Makes No Difference
Main Set
1- Better Man: Eddie wants to start the concert as an extension of his mini set and what a better way than Better Man? Sing along right from the beginning and audience soon deep into the atmosphere. Honest one though, no flaw no extra point.
2- Given To Fly: the start is set in Grand Rapids way and the second is the same. This song has the peculiarity that wherever you put it works fine. Again the band play it well but with no surplus; it seems that the handbrake is not removed yet.
3- World Wide Suicide: from the first note it’s clear that it’s the moment of block of 3. By now they owe it and they throw it with the energy it needs
4- Life Wasted: Stone launch what it’s probably the best riff of the Avocado, so the order of the previous night is respected.
5- Severed Hand: love the intro of this song, and even more the extended one when it opens the gig. jesus boys these songs work good together but begin to play them separated; great Matt doubling Eddie while doing his wild job on his drum-kit.
6- Faithfull: till now, aside of Better Man/Small Town exactly the same set and this is the point to give Cleveland something particular. New entry from Yield introduced by the “swing” beat by Matt and the sweet chord. Very nice one. It’s not the song that can move the balance of a show but it’s good no doubt.
7- Unemployable: good performance for a song that doesn’t deserve to be played almost each and every night for me
8- Gone: Dissident is named and probably it would have been better to play it instead of Gone. I like it quite a lot but I would have preferred later on the set or in Unemployable’s place. Too much “promoting” hehe. Great atmosphere creating by all the 3 guitars .. Eddie’s arpeggio .. the flying notes of Mike .. the Stone gems. Eddie enough deep into the interpretation of the song.
9- Daughter: acoustic Stone to launch a “working together” time .. “normal” Daughter till what defines the song live .. the shades go down the shades go and the pursuing riff says It’s OK ..well belt out by the crowd .. and well welcomed by someone here hehe. The tag comes out pretty good and all the components; enough good singing
10- MFC: I’m enough biased of the mini fast cars, probably cause of its little Italian part behind it .. who knows .. love this quick riff tune that makes as bridge between Daughter and ….
11- IMMORTALITY: nothing would be needed to be said .. it speaks by itself .. this is always a points gaining jolly of a gig. Cleveland is also delighted by the little sweet intro. Love it. And love the picking note by Mike after the first “immortality”. Wonderful the pulled long notes in the first part of the solo. Mike closed eyes fully and deeply in it who knows where. Very carrying the final ride. My addiction on this jewel is well known and so it’s obvious that it’s a top highlight for me.
12- Lukin: cool and weird sequence Immortality->Lukin ..sooo different .. this fast hard punch is always good to have it in your stomach.
13- Do The Evolution: the angry Eddie keeps going with the evolution baby and in pair with Stone drive the crowd to a little bit higher level in wild status. Solid powerful.
14- Spin the Black Circle: Stone remains wild throwing a very pulled and very welcomed another new entry .. drop drop dropping it down. Eddie seems to have a bit of hard times in following the unrestrained pace set by the others hehe. Great
15- Porch: to close the main set. An even slower start than usual, seemingly hint on guitar .. love it. Then the explosion of the second verse and the obvious long jam. Mike didn’t have Even Flow and he needs to release himself hehe amazing and amazing the engine with so many horses power Matt behind him and amazing Jeff picking on his strings.
Encore 1
16- Wasted Reprise: after the hard final sequence of the main set, it’s quite predictable a slow down and this little tune falls apropos opening the road to..
17- Thumbing My Way: other new entry and a missing since this few times in 2006. Sweet delicate like always. This one from Cleveland doesn’t make exception.
18- Inside Job: nice performance of this beautiful number, again Matt showing his skill in backing Eddie vocals.
19- Black: another one that speaks by itself … Immortality .. Black in the same set?? Really? Awesome. All I will ever beeeeee .. close enough to the top .. whispered we belong together .. wonderful. Oh my if Immortality Black were back to back ….
20- Alive: to close this short first encore. A decent one, a bit tired maybe, but about the Classic you’re always very very pretentious as they got us used.
Encore 2:
21- Go: the second encore don’t Go slowly on us; solid hard rock shot
22- Comatose: second jab, less incisive than the other still very tough
23- U: dr experiment seems to make his appearance a bit tonight too. He took some requests and the funny and easy b-side takes his spot in the set. You should take this kind of song as they come and I love when they do .. like …
24- Don’t Gimme No Lips: someone in the crowd wanted Stoney to take all the spotlight and the duck pick the main mic, transforming himself in a “special guest”. What can be said of this song? It’s good if the beloved Stoney wants to have and let have people fun. And he does .. love you Stone hehe
25- Smile: kind of experiment goes on with again the special guest Stone on bass and the special guest Jeff on lead guitar hehe. No Code Smile that’s it. Both the long date friends did a good job on each other instrument giving a good one of this mid-tempo I like a lot.
26- Why Go: Matt “ruins the party” leading all to normality beating the start of this powerful song; not at its best as I feel it.
27- Fucking Up: the frequent Uncle Neil tribute this time falls to this, a bit slower but still always a very good rocking in the free Cleveland. The solos of Mike are very close to the perfection.
28- Yellow Ledbetter: this never-ending encore comes to the conclusion with the classic McCready hail.
I find pretty hard to rate this gig; a weird enough one. The first half the main set put it to a standard/averag, but the second, since lets say Daughter, raises to a different and very high level. Similar thing for the encores .. first not so great if not for the Black presence, second long and with the weirdness I love so much. For my side the rate would fluctuate from 4 to 4 ½.
The contemporary presence of Immortality and Black in the same set pins the needle to the highest extreme of the range.
Highlights: IMMORTALITY - Black – Daughter – Spin The Black Circle – MFC – Porch – Mid part of 2nd encore
Rating: 4 1/2
(sorry for not having been enough long
