1. Earbuds are much much worse than the big headphones are. But loudness is the determining factor. Basically, if other people around you can hear your music when you're using headphones, they're probably too loud!
  2. I use in-ear headphones and find them much better than the buds. Because they do passive noise isolation, you don't need to have the volume up so high.

You're probably at higher risk of hearing damage if you play in a band or go to a lot of gigs where your ears are ringing by the end of the night.
  3. Using in-ear headphones (like iPod headphones) at medium volume is worse than around-the-ear headphones (studio recording headphones, etc) at full volume.

The difference is the proximity to the eardrum- in-ear buds streamline the sound directly to your eardrum to be heard, whereas your entire ear can absorb the volume of a sound when heard from the outside. It seriously does make all the difference. Though I'm the same as Kristin, my ears are fine and I listen with in-ears frequently.

  4. I feel you.
My poor ear drums pray every day that Streets doesn't come in too often in the random playlist...
  5. i use them all the time .....got a set of Sennheiser headphones and i have to buy twice a year a new one ....
i play it mostly loud except when i am on a bus or train ....

  6. this is now a fact.
  7. My gosh! More times that I should.. AND LOUD!! Since I was 13/14. There were even times when it might so damage to my eardrums when all of a sudden I wake up hearing strange "tones" in not only music but in my own and people's voices, though this lasts temporarliy.

  8. Yeah, but my soul pray every day to listen to this magical chords...
