1. Somebody started the topic on U2.com, and since they tend to delete my posts over there,
here is my reply to the topic:

I'd love a Pop Deluxe. I doubt it will happen. First, the sound quality of Cds from 1996 until now is not that different. They probably sounded better back then before everything got too loud.

If they did a Pop Deluxe, after the Cashtung Baby failure, I doubt anybody consults a real true fan, so we would probably get a bunch of remixes. Now, if I was consulted, here would be the Pop Duper Looper Deluxe:

    CD 1: Original Cd remastered
CD 2: B-sides/remixes/Hold Me Thrill Me, and MAYBE Miss Sarajevo and Your Blue Room.
CD 3: remixes and New Mixes from the Best of 1990-2000.
CD 4: Original Mix of the album that was scrapped
CD 5: Demos and other alternate versions not on Cds 2-5

DVD 1: All Videos, and TV Specials
DVD 2: 4/25/97 Las Vegas Concert with the Staring At The Sun mess included.
DVD 3: 06-15/97 Edmonton, Canada Concert
DVD 4: Pick any European Pop Show Pro Shot
DVD 5: 1/31/98 Sao Paulo, Brazil Concert...should have been the official video over Mexico City!

Yeah, this is a pipe or should I say Pop Dream, but that's what I would give the fans if I was Cash Mcguinness. I would
easily pay $100 or more for this. Anything over $175, and I would be crying.

And guess what? No Fly Shades, No Lemon replicas, No Remix of I'll Go Crazy if I Don't Remix This Song Tonight...none of the typical BS that goes in these sets. I would just focus on the music.
I am not fond of remixes, but All the ones from the period belong in this dream set. Too Bad NOBODY IS LISTENING.

What music? The band has constantly admitted that Pop was never truly completed because they rushed the album to make it in time for the tour.
  3. Yeah but then put out inferior updated versions of some of the tracks especially Gone on the 2nd best of (I prefer the 'rushed' version. Although I do prefer the single versions of god, last night and please. Maybe the uber boxset could include Bono's muscle shirt.
  4. i can understand why they deleted your post over at u2.com ('Cash McGuiness' is a guaranteed hasta la vista baby!)

now, Pop/Popmart has always been a personal favourite of mine, though at the same time, i can truly see why (maybe even the band?) were disappointed with the music and tour, i mean, have they played any of those songs in their past tours? except for a few Gone and a couple of Discothèque-snippets here and there?

i guess that if they are going to remaster their entire back catalogue (as they have promised to do), i think this will get the Unforgettable Fire treatment, aka very low key and not the whole shebang ( like 'Cashtung Baby)'

    you still buy this story?
  6. The whole thing didn't work out as calculated. That's it. A little like R&H.

  7. I believe that's more refered to the Popmart tour actually. But on the album, I think they were a bit rushed from Principle or directly Universal. They surely knew they had a great bunch of songs, but they didn't finish/polish/whatever them enough. And you can see that, for example, on the new mix of Gone which appeared on the 1990-00 compilation. It's a softer and more polished song - which of course doesn't mean it's neccesarely better, but it adds some "profesionality" and sustracts some "rawness" to the original feeling of the song. On the other hand, of course the whole album marketing+album selling figures+tour plans weren't as brilliant and successful as they could have been... But I do believe their original story as well.
  8. Of course the new mixes sound more polished. It's a different mix and that's the sound they prefer these days. The whole "we were running out of time" thing only came up after it became clear that the tour would be a failure for the promoters (not the band). Before that, the band praised the whole album and concept. It's the same rhetorics they used for 360.
I don't deny that they rushed the album a little (like with more or less every album - hence the "U2 albums don't get finished, they get released" quote) - it's just not the reason, the whole thing fell flat.
  9. They never complained about the album being "rushed" when it first came out (I supposed that would be bad for business). However, when the eventual poor reviews came along (this didn't happen immediately) then they started making excuses. I'm sure other bands (and probably U2 on earlier occasions) have been pushed to get an album out (think of all the pressure put on The Beatles to get out a product) and have been successful - and not successful.
  10. Pop is a great album.
  11. It definitely got a bad rap (I checked, it's not "wrap" ).

However, I'd be curious to hear a complete upgrade if that's what the band feels it needs.
