+1. Absolutely neccesary, not everyone does it. If you don't do it, strings will take a lot of time (even days) to settle to their actual tension and you will struggle to make the guitar stay in tune.

I think I'll redo it, it doesn't look like it used to... I've succeeded before though.

Grab the string and pull it about one inch away from the fretboard. Re-tune the string, then repeat until the string no longer falls out of tune. Do it for every string.

Do it SLOW or your guitar neck will suffer. De-string it carefully and slowly.

Stretch them like this:

Anyway: if the knot is wrongly done, it won't stay in tune, no matter how much effort you put into stretching the strings or whatever!

And also, use vaseline when you are replacing strings. It lubricates the part where the strings rest and stops the strings from snapping easily. If a girl is with you when you are replacing your strings, make sure you instantly say it's for the strings and not for her.
