1. Long live U2.

I'm not in the band, so I really don't care what they choose to decide. It's like the passing of an elderly sick relative- they've given you so much love and joy, letting them live on in your heart might be better than them suffering anything for longer.

LOL idk if they are THAT old and tired

Hey, they did it for a while on the ZooTV tour! Bono stopped telling the crowd to support Amnesty and to be aware of the issues in South Africa and Central America and stuff. They changed that with the Bosnia broadcasts, but still, it was done, I'm sure they could do it again.

There are many artists who support causes the same as Bono, but do it much less publicly, they keep it out of their artistic lives. Anybody could say "Well that's part of Bono's character!" I say there's room to change that up! Do it differently or something. As for the glasses, yeah they're his thing, but everyone thought the cowboy hat and the long hair was his thing in the late 80's. Everyone thought the fedora and the hobo clothes were Edge's thing at the same time. They changed it up.

Even they're taking about reinvention, and I think that has just as much to do with their image as it does their music. Image can have a HUGE impact on how the music is percieved. Their image has become stagnant, and I think if they're planning on changing it up, that should be included.
  4. The real reason U2 might break up is so Larry can pursue his acting career. I think he's in the Avenger's movie............................as well as the second one due in 2014.
  5. They've done other solo projects in the past (Spiderman, ugh) and it hasn't derailed the U2 express.
  6. In all honesty (I know you guys are probably getting tired of me posting in this thread) we (I) gotta give it a rest on the boys, at least for now. They just gave us the biggest tour in the world, and it was amazing. I for one am going to try to be less "this is what they should do" for a while.

It's just so easy to get caught up in discussions like this!

the results obtained, also thanks to him doing what he's doing, would have been the same doing it much less publicly?
should he take a step back just to sell one more copy of the album? he'd not be the Bono i've learned to know, estimate and love during all these years

That sentence (Theyre always working on the next record) worries me. Can't explain why, but it does. Maybe it's the wording, something implicit, don't know... But I didn't like reading tnat. Moreover, McGuinne$$ has lied (or told hardly-true stories) before, so this isn't that clarifying...

ouch..... I wish you hadn't said that Sergio... because I feel exactly the same and it scares the hell out of me.

Yeah, I just looked at the charts, and they are filled up with over 50 groups. I couldn't find a single artist under 50. It is amazing how Prince, U2, The Eagles, Michael Jackson, Madonna, REM, Susan Boyle, Gomer Pyle, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Van Halen,
Frank Sinatra, and Cliff Richard have all had # 1 worldwide hit singles in 20 or more countries....

I agree with your sentiment. But proper comparisons would be Pearl Jam, Green Day, Metallica, Coldplay, Radiohead. They might be slightly younger than 50, but they look and feel as "old" as U2. Metallica was on Jools Holland yesterday and looked positively ancient. Teaming up with Lou Reed didn't make them look any younger either.

BTW Going back in time a bit shows you what singles can do for a band (WOWY) but also how fickle the singles market is.

Did you know that Jacko's first single for the album Thriller was not a hit (best selling album of all time, 100mio unitd): "The Girl is Mine" charted quite poorly, as did "Billy Jean" initially...only after MTV was blackmailed into playing the video, did sales start to pick up. Billy Jean finally made it to #1 and the album took off with it. It got bumped off the UK#1 spot by...

    ..War!

OK computer sold 5mio units, despite Karma Police barely breaking the Top40.

Coldplay have had some hits, sold 50mio albums '99-'11, but have probably been outsold by U2 in the USA over the same period. Their first single from Viva la Vida wasn't a US hit, the title song was a US#1 (and grammy winning despite its plagiarism).

Now back to reality....U2 have had only ONE single get anything remotely close to airplay in the United States from 2003 to 2011. That was Vertigo, and it hit #31. It did get great airplay on "Classic Rock" stations, but was only played on Pop Radio for around 6 weeks, and then it was gone.

    The Saints are Coming. US#2.

It is possible, that they could have another Vertigo, but even that is a long shot.

Negotiations with Apple for Boots fell through, otherwise it would've benefitted from adplay (not airplay) and would've become the next Vertigo.
