  1. He has published something, I give you that. I published something too, doesn't make me a Nobel contender. Still, to give him the award over poets and novelists that have pushed their native language to higher level, experimenting with the prose, the metaphors, the tradition of literature.
    This was just a big f*** you from the Swedish Academy.

    I dunno. Just reminds me of that time when Jethro Tull beat out Metallica for best metal album at the Grammys.
    It's not the Oscars where lifetime achievement awards are given, all to cinema-related people. The Nobels have their categories and awards are given accordingly. Many if not MOST of the non-scientifical Nobels have always been awarded to lifetime achievements and not to particular works.

    There are countless other writers in the world doing that much better in actual books, not songs.
  5. That point, although I agree with it, is a matter taste - the same taste that it takes to award a prize. So we agree to disagree I think.

  7. Peace awards are also for a very specific thing. Malala won the award (and rightly so) at the age of 17. But just like this year, there have been a lot of WTF awards. Obama is one, giving the award to Al Gore for a documentary or to Yasser Arafat for stop killing people are other examples.

    Agreed. (and for the record, I wasn't knocking Obama or his efforts... it was just the timing, almost as if they were giving him a down payment for his future work (much like Santos)

    Congratulations to Bob Dylan!

    I think it is fantastic that the Nobel-committee acknowledges that there are great use of language outside the literature we´re accustomed to. That lyrics are as important part of our culture as those that are without music around them. Thinking about Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon etc. It is not important if the words are written on books or cd-sleeves. It is irrelevant whether you read them or hear them.

    I think they´re (Nobel-Committee) looking ahead to the future!
