May be part of the reason why four times more people die of traffic-related accidents in the US. (Sweden is second in the world in having the least of those. Something to be proud of.)

Way it worked for me was this:

15, you can legally get your permit. With a permit, you must be driving with an adult at all times.

After you've completed 50 hours (I know its more, now) of logged driving with an adult as practice, you may turn that into the DMV (Department of Motorized Vehicles if I recall correctly), where you take the written test and then provided you pass that, a driving test with someone who works at the DMV.

You can legally get your license at any time after you turn 16.

Usually, an outside driving course is taken (whether through your high school, or through a private place that teaches in the classroom and out on the road). There's too much to learn to trust to a parent, no matter how great they are at driving. Driving all becomes such second nature even after only a few years, so the small things that are essential to know might even slip our minds while we're teaching. That's why we pay for classes.

I was supposed to learn to drive years ago. On my birthday I was given money for 10 lessons from my aunt as my family insist that driving changes your life and improves it in so many ways - and I believe that.
But it's the actual cost of driving and owning a car that has put me right off it. Insurance, fuel etc.... It's much cheaper for me to get the bus or train with my 20% student discount Y'know.

Owning a car is damn expensive - and many of us "overuse" our cars. Wait as long as you possibly can to buy one - but I do recommend you get a licence, if possible. That said, I didn't get mine until I was almost 23 and I've always lived in Canadian suburbia, where public transit systems generally stink.
