BONO performed a small musical tribute at the funeral of the mother of U2 guitarist The Edge at the weekend.

There was tight security at the service for Gwenda Evans at the Presbyterian Church in Malahide, Co Dublin, on Saturday. Having once described her a U2's "first roadie", Bono insisted on giving his own musical send-off and was seen emerging from the service carrying a guitar case before mourners continued on to Glasnevin Crematorium.

U2 were seen later in Malahide pub Gibney's after a private gathering for friends and family in the nearby Grand Hotel.

The Edge's first wife Aislinn O'Sullivan was among the mourners. The former couple, who remain good friends, had three daughters: Holly (27), Arran (26) and Blue Angel (23) together before separating in 1990 and divorcing in 1996.

Wearing his trademark black hat, The Edge (50) had his second wife Morleigh Steinberg, who he married in 2002 and with whom he has a daughter Sian (15) and son Levi (12), by his side at the service. They joined his father Garvin and his brother Richard 'Dik' and sister Jill.

Adam Clayton and his father Brian were among the first to arrive at the church for the funeral of Mrs Evans, who died last week following a long illness.

Bono arrived with wife Ali Hewson, while Larry Mullen and long-time partner Anne Acheson were also present.

Mrs Evans passed away peacefully on June 11 at St Francis Hospice, Raheny.

She is survived by husband Garvin, children Richard, The Edge and Jill, daughters-in-law Miranda and Morleigh, son-in-law Tim, sister Heulwen and grandchildren.
