1. Can someone please explain to me why there isn't a Pixies thread?

Anyway, I have to create a topic for this band. I've had a proper addiction to these guys for the last week and, for the love of God, it won't go away. Four and a bit albums and I still won't get tired of them.

They are probably one of the most influential bands of the last 25 years – influencing bands such as Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Stereophonics, Radiohead, and many more. They've had praise from a number of well respected artists. David Bowie described them as "one of the most compelling bands" he has ever listened to. Even Bono said that they are "one of the best American songwriters."

Pixies only lasted from 1986 to 1993, and their final gigs before splitting up were supporting U2 on their ZooTV tour in North America. They hated playing to half-filled venues where nobody was interested. They reunited in 2004 to sell-out tours and have stayed together since, albeit legendary bassist Kim Deal left the band a couple of months ago and has irritatingly been replaced by another Kim. Their latest EP was abysmal, but their work from the late 80's and early 90's is some of the most profound music in alternative rock. Without the Pixies, alternative rock wouldn't have been what it was in the 90's and even now. They set up that huge alternative rock movement. Even 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' has been described by Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl as a "Pixies rip-off".

  2. I am not familiar with them, I give it a try and listen to some songs of them!
  3. I am not very fond on The Pixies but I know they're somehow one of the most influential bands of the past decades.

Funnily enough, my favorite song by them isn't even played by them; it's the Placebo version of Where Is My Mind:

  4. I'm a huge Pixies fan! Since the end of the 80's. But never had the chance to them live. Maybe this year on their european tour. Hope i can make it. One of the bands i wish to see before i die.
They are on top of the list for the soundtrack of my life, with The Smiths , Pearl Jam and U2 .
Favorite songs: debaser, la la love you, hey, Ana (my daughter's name btw ;-) ), gigantic, i bleed, wave of mutilation ...
  5. Finally someone starts a Pixie's thread! Great band
  6. very good Kieran ... palate up indeed!

i would take "probably" off ... they're surely in the small circle where bands remain unknown to the masses but that summarize your assertion ... Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Husker Du ...
in their discography i have a crush on Doolitlle but few things of them aren't over the top

not a good Deal they're back without the right Kim (bad joke hehe) but it's great they are still on

    seminal
  7. You summarised a lot better than I did. Along with Sonic Youth, they shaped alternative rock into what it became. It was something that Dinosaur Jr. and Husker Du achieved as well. 'Zen Arcade' is a sublime album and influenced Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and even Sonic Youth for that matter.
  8. Just saw these guys a few nights ago. They were phenomenal. Been loving them for awhile now. Great music to walk around campus to.

  9. Ah, I was going to question you on how they were as I'm seeing them in November. That's great, I was worried about there being no Kim Deal but I suppose I'll just have to live with it.
  10. It didn't seem to make that much of a difference except for a few vocal things...but a friend we were with said that they were actually much better when Deal was in the band.

Iconically, I can get it, but I just don't see what honest talent she'd be adding. Sort of like the Smashing Pumpkins...(different case because everyone's been replaced, but...) is a bass player other than D'arcy Wretzky really making any differences? As long as its a chick, you get the same aesthetic.
  11. The Pixies revealed in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal that they plan to continue to release EP’s as surprises, without any real hype.
