I don't know why people are so surprised about this song being selected for the next single. Most people who aren't hardcore fans liked SFS and EBW the most.
It's not their best song in the album by far, some say it's the weakest, maybe.
But it certainly is (one of) the most pop radio friendly song in it, so why not?
Actually, I'd say the only real purpose of having SFS in the album was to release it as a single.
On the other hand, I don't listen radio anymore, so a) I'm not qualified to say what could work or not on the radio, and b) I don't really care which song they choose, so... (but I like to share my opinion anyway).

Now, with the tour about to start, and with no promo whatsoever about the album, and with an album full of "potential" singles (every song in SOI has plenty of fans claiming that THAT would be the best single), how many singles more could they release from here?

Just listened to the song and gotta say: I take off the "almost". I would be embarrased.
I do think that the album has a lot of singles and since U2 is currently forced to do no public appearances due to Bono's injury, announcing singles is the only promotional option they really have.
