Being relevant today hardly even exists. Lil Wayne? No. Taylor Swift? Be Serious. Adele? Sure, to a point. Bruno Mars? Maybe...but at least he and Adele use old school sounds, and use their own actual singing voice...a novel concept these days. .

BEYONCE- Mic Drop. How can you not mention her?!

Lil Waye hasn't done much lately but Kanye is relevant. Drake certainly is.

As much as I hate Taylor Swift she is relevant too. She can identify an audience and knows what they want.

U2 want to be talked about. THAT is what being relevant means. And I've said this a million times; if you aren't chasing relevancy go home.

There's also a decent chance that they just don't want to tell U2 fans that the well has run dry without the help of young, fresh ears coming in and giving them a revamp. Maybe when U2 jams it out for an hour these days, the ideas they come up with all sound like stuff they've done already, or if not, stuff they know doesn't sound as interesting or good as stuff they've already done. They need to keep the music fresh and new in order to steer clear from having it compared to their old stuff. At the same time, they want a release now to be just as exciting as releases have been throughout their career. Wasn't it Eno who said that an artist's biggest enemy is their history?

I think a fresh pair of ears is always welcome. No matter what era we can still identify it as U2 right? It's that heart, those lyrics, that guitar....

Exactly. Even without the guitar (Zooropa, maybe Pop to a lesser extent) the magic is still there.

If anything, SoI wasn't risky enough in my opinion. I hope Bono's sentiments from a while back that SoE will be sonically more exciting end up being true.

You gotta admit, despite how people may feel about the version of The Best Thing that Kygo played, releasing that AS IS as the next U2 single would be a pretty cool move. I know not everyone would like it, but I don't know. I think having people say "THIS is U2?..." is way more exciting than "This is U2".
  4. This is literally the only place where I see people talking about relevance as if it's a bad thing.

I agree with this exactly. Songs of Innocence was a great album - it might very well be my favourite. It certainly wasn't a retread of old material or old sounds, despite what some may say. But I think for Songs of Experience... things have to change even more. I'm excited to see what they can cook up.
  6. I think it would be a very interesting introduction to Songs of Experience if they decided to first release a remixed version of a track song.

So it means being themselves is not relevant? I don't think so.

Zooropa and Pop are without guitars? There are electronics, yes, but there is A LOT of guitars on both albums...

I was commenting on the post before mine about "that guitar....", which I took to mean that classic Edge chime.

Yeah there's a lot of guitar on both albums, but not THAT guitar. THAT guitar didn't really show up again until All That You Can't Leave Behind.

Trust me, I know There was a time when I could play nearly every U2 song on guitar and knew which effects were used on them and so on.

  10. Where this thread is going....
  11. No it does, Im saying they dont have to try to be relevant. They are on their own
