1. We all were I think
It's already kind of a tradition: the main singles or previews have been among the worse tracks (if not the worst tracks, I'm looking at you GOYB) of their respective albums. Even strong songs like Discothèque and The Fly are arguably in the bottom half of their albums, not to mention Stuck In A Moment, The Miracle, Vertigo, etc. So yeah, I was putting a lot of hope in The Best Thing and The Blackout being among SOE's worse ones
  2. Problem is it's not an original work...as "reheated riffs " demonstrate

    +1
  4. One just doesn't get invited to an event where your favourite band plays you their new album 2 weeks in advance to the rest of the world... and go out venting and critizicing it. It's like critizicing the gifts your parents give you for Christmas, if you know what I mean.

I find GOOYOW much worse than Best Thing - which I started to like (not love). And I love Blackout and Little Things... Btw. The Fly is in my top half of AB

I know, that's true offcourse. must be an experience though, wished they had do that in multiple cities.

Shit, I woke up at 4AM in 2009 just to hear Boots on Irish radio across the internet and couldn't stop talking about how fucking awesome it was. That was until I showed my best friend and he was like "really?" and I started thinking a little more critically of it

(the straw that broke the camel's back for him was the little guitar interlude Edge plays after the first chorus )

Also, to be on topic: I still think the Kygo mix of Best Thing is just fantabulous, and that U2 should've used it as their own version/first single. I stand by it being really great, and will definitely be replacing the album version with it on my digital playlist.

I perfectly remember that morning too, it's one of those moments you remember forever. Standing in the middle of the street with my ex-girlfriend (who wasn't really into U2 atm), trying to catch a good radio signal to listen to the premiere, and then coming here and raving about how great it was.

    It was not.

Hahahaha, yup. I remember showing my dad that morning and all he said was "well, it doesn't really sound like anything else they've done that's for sure."

I don't think I realized until later that it was his nice way of saying "this is what U2 are doing now? Yikes"
  10. In general for me the choice of the first single of a U2 record is certainly not the best song on the record or belonging to the best songs.
Boots is one of the worst songs U2 ever like also Numb, 1st single of Zooropa. The Fly, Discotheque, Vertigo are ok. But not belonging to the best songs of AB, POP, HTDAAB.

I didn't think of Numb, another good example. Although Numb at least is risky and definitely exceptional with Edge singing and all. But still among the "less valuable" in its album.

I loved Numb... and it comes with really funny video Now it's not among top ones, but kinda like it and have soft spot for it
