  3. OK, no pre-Christmas release - but most of us were expecting this anyway, with the tour ending at the end of the month. I'm still (very much) hoping for a Spring release.
  4. Well this sucks

One can dream but indeed a pre-Christmas release was extremely unlikely.

Not impressed that the band is trying to "compete" with these artists for album sales.
  7. Jup, me neither. But compete with these artists doesn't place them in the same genre or league. It's just that they (U2) still want to be relevant and, also important, be played on the radio and selling albums. I think that a band like Pearl Jam or even someone very non-mainstream will wait a bit longer with releasing an album when those big, populair names are releasing.

As long as U2 is not going to start doing collaborations with non fitting artists (Beyonce, some rapper etc.) or make some extreme pop sounding album, I'm alright with it.
  8. But does he mean "it won't come out soon" or "it won't be near as good as those albums"?
    Could be both imo.

Wait a sec...was that a dig at PJ? ...and two PJ references in one post!

    The "dig" may be deserved.
  10. This may actually have less to do with album sales than we think. Remember when SOI was released, they put it out for free. They knew that decision would cripple the sales, but they did it anyways because they were more interested in the attention it brought them. The plan at the time was to transition the free album release into the massive media appearances and push leading up to the tour (remember they were going to show up on The Tonight Show for an entire week, which is a huge deal). Unfortunately, these plans were derailed by Bono's injury.

I don't believe they are concerned about competing with the other releases for album sales, but rather they are concerned about the competition for exposure and attention. Yes, we can bring this into a conversation about how U2 has struggled to be "relevant" in today's time, but I'd rather not do that and instead offer a different perspective. The bands they would be competing with have quite a few stories behind their releases Adele hasn't released a song in a very long time, so there's quite a stir with her. This would be 1D's first release since losing one of their no-name members, so people are interested in that. For Coldplay, it has long been rumored that A Head Full Of Dreams will be the band's farewell album, so again people are keen to see how they close the curtain. SOE would be a very significant release for those deep in the U2 camp, but for most everyone else it would easily be overshadowed by the other big storylines. The fact that U2 are intentionally waiting for an opportunity to release their new album indicates to me that they don't want SOE to be seen in the same light as Zooropa in that it was released with very little fanfare and did not change the tour significantly. My guess (and my hope) is that the tour will be significantly retooled after SOE is released. We may see something entirely different when they come around for those second legs.

But... if it's business as usual with a couple SOE songs rotated on the e-stage, we can go back to discussing U2's obsession with relevance.
  11. Haha no, no it wasn't my intention to dig at Pearl Jam. I wouldn't dare when quoting you, besides after U2 Pearl Jam are my favorite band.
The first time I mentioned them was more of a complement, it seems like they don't really care about being on number one every time they release something.
And the second thing I just realise now that Pearl Jam played with beyonce not long ago, but I was pointing more to a band like Coldplay who, imo, are recording and putting out songs together with artists like that (who aren't similar but still good, don't get me wrong) just to get attention.
